Smart Decorating for Christmas: Conserving Electricity

Kevin Smith
Saving energy and having a lower electric bill is a concern for many people year-round. Of course, this is harder to do during the summer season due to the need of air-conditioning, but it can also be a concern during the holiday season. Christmas is a holiday where people like to use lights and other electrical decorations to decorate their homes on the inside and on the outside. Using lights and other holiday decorations has a direct effect on the electric bill. For this reason, we're going to go over a few ways that will help save energy, when decorating for Christmas.

The easiest way to save energy when it comes to Christmas decorations, is to use less lights. Many of us like to decorate the outside our homes. Some of us decorate our entire houses from the roof, to the porch, to the patio, to the front yard, etc.. Most of the time, decorating the entire outside our homes makes them look more beautiful, but if we only decorate our front porch versus the entire outside of our house, by-passers will still get the picture. Likewise, using less lights when decorating the inside of our homes will also help us save energy and in turn will cause us to have a cheaper electric bill. We can use garland as an alternative. Also, instead of using extravagant decorations such as a Santa Claus, a snowman, candy canes, and reindeer's that light up at night, you can use nonelectrical signs and figures as decorations. We can also apply this when decorating our Christmas tree.

A lot of times, people do not decorate the outside of their homes, but only decorate a Christmas tree. As stated previously, using less lights anytime you can will help. This also applies to those of us that like to use bright ornaments for the top of our tree. The bright ornaments sometimes can have a greater effect on the electric bill than the Christmas lights will. There are a lot of nonelectric alternatives that can be just as beautiful for the top of our Christmas tree. Keep that in mind when choosing a topper. Having things plugged into your outlets even when not turned on, has an effect on the electric bill. So make sure when your lights are not in use that they are not plugged in either. Things that are plugged in but not turned on don't have a huge effect on the electric bill, but they still do.

Another suggestion for saving energy with Christmas decorations would be using an automatic timer for your electric decorations, which will turn them on at a set time, and likewise turn them off after they've been on for certain amount of time. Sometimes we plug in our lights and go to sleep without remembering to turn them off. Using an automatic timer will avoid this from happening. You can also choose certain days of the week to have your decorations lit up. This will help save energy because you won't be using electricity with your decorations seven days a week.

This should give you some basic ideas on how to save energy with Christmas decorations. It is true that a lot of decorations can make our homes look very nice, but sometimes it is too much. Some people use a lot of decorations to impress family or friends that may visit for the holidays. You can still make an impression using nonelectrical decorations. Remember, having friends and family visit your home during holidays, alone will cause some kind of increase in your electric bill, without the decorations. So make sure you are doing what you can to save energy during the holiday season.
