Safety latches on cabinets and drawers should be installed inside the kitchen. It's likely you keep most of your cleaning products below the sink. By installing these latches, you will help to keep your child from getting into the dangerous chemicals and cleaning products. It will also help to prevent them from getting into drawers where knives and scissors are kept. Try to make it a habit to only use the back burners when you are cooking. Also, try to keep the handles of the pots and pans turned to the inside, away from the reach of your child.
Another place safety latches should be installed is in the bathroom. Again, these latches will help to keep them out of any cleaning products you have stored in the cabinets. It will also prevent them from gaining access to any medications you may keep in the bathroom.
When it comes to appliances in the bathroom, it is important to make sure you keep them all unplugged. Items such as: Electric razors, curling irons, blow dryers, etc. . . . Always be sure they are out of reach of your child. A valuable lesson to teach your child is electricity and water is a dangerous combination. Make sure they understand to never put electrical appliances in, or under water, any under circumstances.
It's also a good idea to utilize toilet locks, if you have a small child. It will keep the lid down, and prevent your child from playing in the toilet. Without a toilet lock, your child can potentially fall into the toilet and drown. Believe it or not, a small child can actually drown in water less than an inch deep. With that in mind, it's best to keep the bathroom door shut at all times when not in use.
Another way to help protect your child around your home is to anchor heavy objects to the wall. Large TV's, heavy bookshelves, and any other furniture which can tip easily should be bracketed to the wall. To prevent your child from going into storage closets or leaving the house, you should use doorknob covers.
Another danger, which many parents are unaware of, is the cords on blinds. If the cords on the blinds are looped, you should tie them in a way that puts them out of your child's reach. Looped cords on blinds have been known to strangle children who get them wrapped around their neck. Electrical outlets should have plastic protective covers over or in them. Unfortunately, kids like to put their fingers and metal objects inside the outlets, which will cause them to be electrocuted.
This guide is a good start to protecting your child inside your home. You need to do a safety inspection and make safety adjustments based on your individual home. Any dangers need to be remedied immediately. The world is a dangerous enough place; the least you can do is to make sure your child is safe inside their own home.
