Smashbox Heartbreaker Shades for Spring Makeup

Think Bright with Smashbox Heartbreaker Cosmetics

L. Lee Scott
While natural is one popular look for spring, another hot trend is brights, the colors we haven't seen since the '80s (or the '60s before that!). Think bright violet, teal, fuschia and you're getting the right idea.

Smashbox cosmetics are on top of the trend with their Heartbreaker line for spring. With both individual shadows in colors like Torch (bright copper), Lagoon (bight teal), and Spellbound (lavender), and two "Heartbreaker " eye shadow palettes with six shades each, Smashbox will catch your eyes. Hot Date has Creme Brulee, Chestnut, Champagne (all neutrals), Azure (deep teal), mint (a lighter, greener shade), and Warm Taupe. Kiss N' Tell features Ballet Pink (very pale pink), Hot Pink, Icy White, Deep Violet, Charcoal (sparkly black) and Peony (old rose). Use the light shades, like Creme Brulee and Ballet Pink from lash line to lid, and the deep shades, Azure or Deep Violet, in the crease and along the lash line. For a more defined line, use Smashbox arced liner brush Number 21; dampen it and pick up some of the Charcoal, and carefully line the eyes, with a wing up at the outer corner. Or use a brush like the Cream Eyeliner Brush and push it into the shadow color you want to use, then carefully put it along the lash line. Use a smudging brush (the Double-Ended Smudger is perfect) to add color over the liner, and smudge it for a smoky look. To make your eyes look wider (and wide awake) use the Icy White in the inside corner.

Light up your skin with a "from-within" look with the Heartbreaker Baked Fusion Soft Lights in Baked Starlight. With a big brush like the Face and Cheek Brush (#2) or a Fan Brush (#22) sweep color from all over the Soft Lights across your face, and you'll be illuminated - and breath-taking. Use this on your décolleté if you're feeling daring! If you prefer a single color, try the creamy cheek color like Captivate, or go for silken powder Blush Rush in Radiance (a bright fuschia) or Passion (rosy plum).

Shine your lips with Heartbreaker Lip Shine in Berry Hot or Melon Drama - two bright kissable shade. If you're worried about them lasting, apply a lip primer, then a lipstick in nude or pale pink before applying the Lip Shine; another tip is to use a brush with these glosses to get them thickly all over your lips instead of all over your fingers. If you prefer your gloss in a more traditional tube, try the Lip Enhancing Gloss in a Sheer Color like Candid (rosy pink with gold) or Spark (sheer berry), or True Color like Electric (shimmery fuschia) or Couture (bright melon).

You can find these products at the Smashbox website (www.smashbox.com) and most Smashbox counters, and you'll find some of them at Sephora, too. If Smashbox is a little out of your budget range, then take a good look at the colors, and choose something similar in your favorite brand. Think spring, and get ready to break some hearts!

  • Bright colors, like melon, fuschia, teal, and purple, are BACK!
  • Smashbox Heartbreak has two eye palettes, Hot Date (teal) and Kiss N'Tell (purple).
  • All-over pink color is what you'll find in the Heartbreaker Fusion Soft Lights.
To make lip gloss stay on longer, start with a lip primer all over your lips; let it dry; top it with a nude or pale lipstick and let that set; then use a brush to apply the gloss in two layers.
