Preparing Your Face
Before blending your foundation, prepare your canvas by washing your face with a mild cleanser. Use a non-greasy moisturizer along with primer. Primers are designed to help your makeup last longer. The primer is a base that helps to hold everything together. Smashbox primers are high grade and made for several skin types. If your skin is oily, choose an oil-free clear or white primer lotion.
However, if you suffer from rosacea or other skin pigment problems, choose a green or purple based primer. The colors will blend into your skin and help mask any redness. The lotion itself does look like a deep purple or green, but after blending you will not see the bright colors, but you will notice that redness is diminished. Smooth on a dime-sized amount of primer on your forehead, nose and cheeks.
Foundation Concealer and Powder
Apply a thin layer of concealer to areas that you want to mask such as dark circles, pimples or other pigments on your skin. Blend in with light tapping motions. Be careful around your eyes because the skin under your eyes is paper thin and very delicate. After applying your concealer, dab a dime-sized amount of foundation on your forehead, chin and cheeks. Blend the foundation into your skin with clean finger tips. Move in circular motions.
You can also use a Smashbox foundation brush or makeup sponges. When using sponges, blend with light tapping as well as circular motions. Once you have achieved the coverage you desire, pat and swirl a small amount of powder with a powder buff or makeup brush all over your skin. The powder will help to set your foundation so that it lasts longer.
Eyes
Apply an eye shadow primer before applying color to your lids. When going out during the day, choose neutral shades like brown, light purple and other pastels. These colors work for just about any skin tone. At night you can go more dramatic with rich deep blue, purple or other dramatic shades. Have fun and try out various colors to match the right color with your skin tone. Apply a few coats of mascara to complete your look.
Lips
Your lips are the finishing touch for any look. Smashbox Photo Finish Lipstick with Sila-silk is a rich formula with vitamin E. Depending on the occasion you can dress your lips up or down. When wearing lipstick, apply lip primer first. Choose a color that complements your skin tone. If you are very fair you may like pink colors from Smashbox like Pout, Charming or Flirty. Nude shades also work well on fair skin. Splendid is a lovely nude shade. There are also many shades that are a combination of nude and pink like Flawless and Exquisite.
When going out at night you can choose darker shades like red . If you have darker skin, you can go bold with your lips even during the day. During the fall and winter months try deep plum and red shades. Bright pink may not be the most flattering for darker skin. However, be sure to experiment because each person is unique and you may be able to be more flexible with different colors.
