Smear Campaign

Lisa R. Strong
Politics, race, and religious intolerance;
Are used as tools of domestic war;
Pitting brother against brother;
Husband against wife;
And friend against friend;
Who can one trust?
Caught in a quagmire of hate;
Dissolving whole families;
Destroying relationships;
He said, she said, mentalities;
It hurts when a loved one grows cold;
And a friendship grows bitter;
An extended hand gets slapped away;
And a white flag is torn to shreds;
Anger and tears on both sides;
The crevice between us grows;
Why can't we accept each other?
Our sad divisions remain;
We hold onto our grudges;
They become our comfort;
No, we won't compromise;
We will never apologize;
Instead we just point fingers;
And lay blame on others;
Without ever looking inward;
We will not forgive;
And we will not forget;
It doesn't matter who we have hurt;
Even if it is ourselves

Dear readers...This piece I had begun to write two weeks ago, and had hit a brick wall with it...the events of the last few days have really saddened my heart. I try to avoid controversy like the plague...I don't like getting involved in drama of any kind...I am aware that this piece will invoke strong opinions. But please don't anyone take it personally...this poem basically expresses my dismay that although this is the year 2008, we still have a long way to go in treating others with the love and respect that they deserve...and also, that we still do not accept others for who they are. It also expresses my disgust at the length that some of our politicians will go to sling mud at each other. Don't misconstrue this poem...I AM NOT ENDORSING ANY OF THE CANDIDATES. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. We are a divided nation. Let us hope (and pray) that we overcome these divisions very soon.

    A lesson learned many (many) years ago, was if you are pointing a finger at someone, there are three pointing back at you. Why can't we all just get along? Because there are those who use divisiveness for their own gain. Your talents are well displayed here, as well as you heart and passions. Well done.

    Well said and well written, Lisa. Especially meaningful after the fallout from surprising events following perhaps ill-judged and/or misguided remarks among groups of AC CPs. Well done.

    Lisa your words are very insightful. A recent attempt to simply ask a question about factual issues resulted in an amazing array of never ending venom and hatred being projected toward me, my family, and my church. I finally allowed my husband to read the transcript of the comments that were left on my Obama article and it hurt him more than you can imagine. My children (who are older) also read them along with my mother. My family was shocked and saddened. You are right. Smear campaigns happen every day, even here on AC. It will be a long time before our nation is comfortable enough to maturely discuss these issues. No matter our race or gender, we should be able to talk openly with each other about our fears and concerns. Open discussion is what clears the air. The folks who are afraid to open the dialog (in an adult fashion) are hindering our nation. Thank you for being willing to open the discussion.
