Smokable Home Remedies for Coughs

Herbs to Soothe the Lungs

Myranda Morgan
This article deals with herbal home remedies for coughs that can be smoked.

Herbalist and botanist Howie Brounstein, who operates a website dedicated to wildcrafting and related topics, says that smoking herbs can be safer than ingesting them. The odds of overdosing on a toxic substance are less when the substance is smoked.

Whether you are a smoker who would prefer to smoke your medicine rather than swallow it, or you just hate the taste of conventional medicines, there are smokable herbs that can help soothe and clear your lungs.

Note: The herbs mentioned in this article are presumed by the author to be legal to possess but this may not be the case in your state or country. Please check your local laws before buying or smoking any questionable substances. Educate yourself on both the medical and legal aspects of herbal home remedies before attempting to use any herbal remedy.

Mullein Leaf, Verbascum thapsus

Mullein leaf is a great example of a smokable herb that soothes and opens the lungs. Mullein is an expectorant. When smoked either alone or in a smoking mixture, it opens up the lungs and promotes coughing to help clear the lungs of mucous. Tuberculosis patients used to smoke Mullein leaf cigarettes to help with coughing fits.

Mullein is a smooth smoke and can be smoked alone or in a mixture with other smokable herbs.

Lobelia, Lobelia inflata

Lobelia is another smokable herb that opens up the lungs. Also known as puke weed, Lobelia is a powerful herb that should not be smoked alone. This means that the Lobelia should be mixed with another smokable herb such as mullein leaf.

Lobelia can cause vomiting and death if misused. Herbalist Howie Brounstein recommends mixing just a small pinch of Lobelia in with a bag of other herbs.

Lobelia can also be used as a nicotine replacement. The herb fools your brain into believing that you are smoking nicotine. This makes it the smoking choice of many who are trying to quit smoking tobacco.

Horehound, Marrubium vulgare

Howie Brounstein has identified Horehound as a powerful expectorant. He recommends mixing it with other smokable herbs and warns readers not to use it when coughing up blood or having painful breathing. If this is the case, he says, see a medical doctor.

Coltsfoot, Tussilago farfara

Coltsfoot is another smokable herb that promotes coughing and helps clear the lungs. Like most smokable herbs, it should be smoked in a mixture with other herbs.

Howie Brounstein's website, listed in the resources at the end of this article, is a great place to start learning more about smokable herbs.
