Smokers Save Money on Cigarettes: Especially when New Federal Tobacco Tax Goes into Effect

A. T. Perkins
Smokers beware! With the new tax on cigarettes enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on February 4, 2009. A 62-cent increase in the federal cigarette tax, along with increases in other tobacco taxes, to fund expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The federal cigarette tax will increase to $1.01 per pack on March 31, 2009. Since January 1, 2002, 44 states and the District of Columbia have increased cigarette taxes, some more than once. So the price of cigarettes and tobacco is going to skyrocket.

I know you're tired of everybody saying, "Just quit"! Well, as we all know, it's not that easy. Some of us just don't have the will power to go cold turkey, or the money it costs to by the nicotine supplements to help us quit.

I went a different route - roll your owns. I'm not talking about the old pack of papers, bag of tobacco and a little spit. Cigarettes that often look like a pregnant Marijuana cigarette; nor am I endorsing any particular brand. For a little under twenty-dollars you can get a six-ounce bag of quality tasting tobacco ( they sell bigger bags ), a box of two-hundred cigarette tubes with filters, and a cigarette rolling-machine or injector. These products come from various suppliers and manufacturers, and again I'm not endorsing any particular brand. I suggest you ask a person at the local tobacco shop for their recommendation, or try different types.

After buying the roller all you have to do is buy the bags of tobacco and rolling tubes. The roller is a simple enough item to figure out, but there are directions included. After awhile you get the hang of it and can churn them out. You really get your money's worth buying the tobacco and tubes. If you take into my situation: six-ounce bag of tobacco in my area is seven dollars and twenty-six cents plus tax, two-hundred rolling- tubes are one dollar and ninety-nine cents, and there are two of us smoking. The six ounce bag lasted us over two weeks! Not bad.

I'm not saying don't try to quit. I'm not encouraging people to smoke. I'm just saying there are some of us who have tried to quit and couldn't stop, and who someday might quit; but, until then I'm trying to help you save a couple bucks. And, if you decide to go this route, you might want to stock up on a couple of bags to keep fresh in the fridge - before the new tax goes into effect. Good luck!

  • The roll-your-owns taste just as good as the name brands.
  • Are the tobacco companies being taxed also, or just the consumer?

Bottom line. TOO much government! Served for 15 years, smoke, and AM DAMNED tired of "continuing" to have too much say in my life. Not an extremist, but am simply "sick" of it. Let's tax lawmakers 10 percent EVERY time they vote themselves a raise and deficit will dwindle quickly!

Yes, unfortunately the State of Kentucky's sumptuary tax's, or " sin tax" has singled out and skyrocketed the price of roll your own (RYO) tobacco. The price of a one-pound bag of tobacco has risen from $15.00 to $45.00 & up. Therefore, by barking up RYO tobacco, I have steered readers astray and I apologize. If you live in a state where the sumptuary or "sin tax" doesn't effect RYO tobacco and products - good. But it just so happens I was in the State of Kentucky when I got the idea for the article; and again I apologize and have learned my lesson when it comes to research. A. T. Perkins

The Federal Tax goes into effect April 1st. Supposedly their earmarking the money for the Health care system. Who knows...?

To add insult to injury for those who would roll their own in an effort to minimize the cost increase, not only did the tax increase on roll your own tobacco jump by over two thousand percent, but the increase in taxation on rolling papers and tubes went up by nearly a hundred percent on papers and over two hundred percent on tubes.

Clearly the aim here is to discourage smokers from smoking. I find it odd that they should earmark the money received for such an important program when the aim is to legislate this group out of existence.

I live in CA and if the tax isn't scheduled to go up until March 31 why am I already paying it? A pack of cigarettes raised 85 cents 2 days ago. Am I in for another raise of $1.01 on March 31? I heard nothing about ANOTHER tax increase to pay for something unrelated to smoking in CA AGAIN this month.
If everyone quit smoking, which nobody in any state or federal government wants how would all the funding for these programs for education, health care, breast cancer research, the ads to propagandize and demonize smokers be paid for?

I'll second the comment that the RYO tax has gone up in the order of thousands of percents. What was around a $1 per pound tax is now just under $25 per pound. One of the few products where the parts may acually cost more than the sum. I'm sure the tobacco kings, JRJ, etc had something to do with the crafting of this bill. But good news non-smokers...NY is targeting and beginning to put together a soda tax. Then, maybe there will be the junk food tax, then maybe the name brand clothing tax. These would solve other health related concerns such as obesity and school violence. I NEED the government to protect me from myself!! Help me!!!

I see you were just short enough to be cute and didn't leave a link to educate us all...and the last time you smoked a pound of tobacco I bet that 24.50/lb. lasted about three months between two people. If you had taken your time to read the article you would have seen I was making the point in RYO vs. packs of name brand which will be going up $1.01 a pack. Thank you for your interest in my article.
