I live in such a small town and along with it comes the small minded mentality. Our smokers line up on the infamous tree tower lawn picketing the new smoking ban. I wonder where were the people picketing at every restaurant that they chose non smoking seating preference and the grey smokey haze floated over to their table regardless of where they sat. Children were once subjected to the harmful biproduct of the cigarette in any restaurant you could go to. But now the smoking ban has passed and I am all for it. Now I don't have to choose a section to sit in, I can sit and eat wherever I like. I no longer have to worry about the floating smoke while I am trying to enjoy my meal. I no longer have to worry about my son breathing the fumes from a smoker at the next table. I can breathe clean, smoke free air. Good riddance to bad habits.
Many of the states have already gone to some sort of public non smoking ban. In fact thirty three out of fifty have already enforced some kind of public no smoking ban. The state legislature has found many reasons or benefits to the public no smoking ban. Some of the reasons for the ban were based on a medical and scientific basis. It has been proven by many medical and scientific studies that second hand smoke is harmful and can even be deadly if exposed to it long term. A study in 2002 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer for the world health organization concluded that non smokers are exposed to the same harmful carcinogens as smokers.
Bans on public smoking will also improve the air quality in restaurants and bars. A study in 2004 proved that the air quality inside smoke filled establishments proved to be nine times more polluted than the air outside in New York City!! The public no smoking ban will eliminate the unecessary indoor pollution and people can breathe cleaner healthier air.
If you plan to visit our historic tree tower any time soon, you can rest assured that you can dine at any local restaurant smoke free. There will no doubt be some debate over the issue, but in this case the majority wins. For the smoker's you still have the right to cloud up your own lungs in your home and your car. Thirty three states now have some form of public no smoking ban. Look out America, the public no smoking ban might be heading your way soon.
