When people think of smoking cessation, they think in simple terms. Smoking cessation involves quitting smoking. However, many do not realize there is much more to smoking cessation than merely quitting. In order to effectively quit smoking, once must do more than change certain behaviors. Mind sets have to be broken down and rebuilt in order to quit smoking. That is much more difficult than it sounds.
Successful smoking cessation plans must be well thought out. If it were easy to quit, people would quit as they pleased. Since smoking cessation is a difficult process, though, a well thought out and orchestrated plan is needed. Also, it is important for the smoker to know what his or her body will go through during the cessation process. Preparation is the key to success with smoking cessation.
If you are a smoker and plan to quit, prepare yourself for grouchiness. No one likes to be grouchy, but instead of focusing on the mood, focus on the end result. A few days of grouchiness will lead to a lifetime of healthier living. Understand that you have become addicted to a drug, and during the smoking cessation process your body is fighting against the withdrawal of the drug. It is natural. While you may be grouchy and tired for a few days, it is well worth it.
Anxiety is something else to expect during the smoking cessation process. If you find yourself feeling anxious, understand that it is nothing to be concerned about. Smoking is often used as a coping mechanism to avoid dealing with stressful situations. Oftentimes, smokers do not realize how much stress they have in their lives until they begin the quitting process. While the anxiety can seem overwhelming at times, understand that after the smoking cessation process is over, you will simply have to adapt new coping mechanisms. The good news is that there are plenty of healthy coping mechanisms you can adopt that are more socially acceptable and that will not cause cancer.
Weight gain is another side effect of smoking cessation. Fortunately, it is also a controllable one. While those who are quitting smoking desire food, one does not have to cave into the desires. If you notice that you are gaining weight, evaluate what you are doing. Smoking cessation is supposed to lead to healthier living. Therefore, do not give up one problem and jump into another. If you need to have something to munch on, stock up on fruits and vegetables during the cessation process.
After you understand what you are getting yourself into, it is then time to make a plan. There are making smoking cessation products out there to aid in the cessation process. With so many products, surely one will work for you. If the first smoking cessation product is not a success, do not be afraid to try another one. Failure is not a reason to quit. Just because you fail the first time does not mean that the second time will not be a success.
While deciding on smoking cessation aids, consider the nicotine replacement patch. Smoking cessation is much more realistic with the help of nicotine replacement. While there are some downsides to using the patch, it is incredibly beneficial. Smoking cessation should be as pleasant as possible so the addict is able to get through it. The patch allows the person to continue to have nicotine in his system, in regulated doses. Therefore, the person can focus on breaking the mental habit. Patch wearers are weaned off the physically addicting nicotine while working on the causes of their smoking.
Nicotine patches are not the only smoking cessation aids. There are other measures one can take in order to quit smoking. The other options also allow for the smoker to break the habit of smoking while avoiding physical withdrawal. Some rely on the use of prescription medication to aid in the smoking cessation process. Chantix is currently considered to be the miracle drug when it comes to smoking cessation. Users of Chantix notice a significant difference in the taste of cigarettes. Also, cigarettes lose their "kick." This allows smokers to focus on breaking the habit while not dealing with withdrawal.
Both Chantix and the nicotine replacement patch require a lot of hard work on behalf of the users. It is important to stay focused and discover times and situations when a cigarette is most craved. Initially, it may be important to avoid those situations. Eventually, though, those situations will be able to be re-entered.
There are many ways to achieve smoking cessation. From pills to patches, it is possible to quit smoking. However, it is important to realize that there is not miracle cure for smoking. It takes hard work and dedication in order to achieve smoking cessation, but the work is well worth it.
