Smoky Mountains in the Fall

Amy Stepp
Fall is the best time of the year. Most people would disagree with this, however, I think when the Fall season finally arrives there are so many great activities outside you can do compared to the rest of the seasons. One of my family's favorite activities is going to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to see the changes in the leaves during the Fall.

Each year during October, we pack up our bags and head up to the Smokey Mountains for the weekend. It is a great time for us to spend together and enjoy the change of the season. While we are there we usually take long hikes through the Smokey Mountain National Park. Since there are more then 800 hiking trails in this National Park, it is easy to get lost in the woods for the day just exploring nature at its best. Seeing that we are in the woods for a great deal of the daylight hours we tend to pack a picnic lunch and pop a squat along the hiking trails for a bite to eat. It really it a great activity to enjoy. The Smoky Mountains are one of the best places in the United States to experience outdoor life and the changing of the leaves. The leave colors are the most magnificent thing to experience.

Also, during the weekend we go there is always a Fall Festival going on. This year will mark the 13th annual Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival. I absolutely enjoy spending time with my family at this festival. It is such a great Fall outdoor activity for us to share together. From the craft shows to live entertainment, many decorating contests to amazing southern mountain food, there is something there for everyone to enjoy. I know we always end up loosing the time when we are strolling through Pigeon Forge during this festival with the crispness in the air and the smell of bacon cooking in the oven. It is just a memorable Fall activity to enjoy.

If you would like to check out all the festivities and get more information about the Smoky Mountains and/or the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival then check out http://www.smokymountainharvestfestival.com/ for everything you need to know from what events are going on each day to places to stay. The festival starts September 24th and runs all the way through October 31st. It is defiantly worth the trip and I can safely say that it will be a Fall activity that you will continue as a tradition each and every year!
