Smoldering Embers

Lisa R. Strong
I can see you;
Sitting at a wooden table;
Only a few yards from me;
Do you know I am watching you?
Probably not;
I see the white smoke;
From your burning cigarette;
As it slowly rises in the air;
Your smile is magic;
You do not notice me;
Sitting on these stone steps;
Writing my words down;
In a small notebook;
You have no knowledge;
That every day you inspire me;
To be the best that I can be;
When I get the chance;
I love to make you laugh;
I find it hard to believe;
That there is no one home;
Waiting just for you;
Someone to share your days;
And to hold you close at night;
There have been times;
When my heart tries to fool me;
And I believe that you want me too;
Maybe it is because you laugh;
At my spontaneous one-liners;
Or maybe because you like my quiet singing;
Perhaps it is at those rare moments;
When your hand accidently brushes mine;
Oh how easy it is;
For a lonely heart to be deceived!
A heart that has been in love;
Yet has never been loved in return;
Maybe nothing will ever come of this;
There have been many times;
When attraction never connected;
When the fire in my heart;
Is reduced to smoldering embers;
This could be God reminding me;
That I am not untouchable;
By the spark of love;
That can inflame a human soul;
No matter how many times;
I have tried to keep;
That tiny hot spark;
From ever igniting.
