Smuckers Sugar Free Concord Grape Jam

It's Not the Quality You Expect from Smuckers

Becky Smith
Are you watching your sugar intake? Are you diabetic or pre-diabetic? Then admit it, you frequently find yourself longing for a fix of something sweet. I know that I was when I decided to go into the kitchen and make myself a piece of toast with jam for a mid-morning snack. I cannot use just any jam of course, since I am pre-diabetic. I was planning on using the Smuckers Sugar Free Concord Grape jam I had purchased at the grocery store on Sunday.

I thought it would be a great addition to my diet since the Smuckers Sugar Free Concord Grape Jam is sweetened with Splenda and has only 5 grams of carbs per serving.

I popped my bread in the toaster, retrieved the jam from the fridge and was all set for a tasty sugar free treat when it happened. I put a bit of the grape jam on the end of a spoon, tasted it, and nearly gagged. I double-checked the label to make sure I had actually bought sugar free jam and not some other unusual foodstuff.

I have no idea where Smuckers got the idea that they should market this stuff as jam, but they are sadly mistaken. While I realize that it is sugar free, and it is not going to taste like the jam that grandma slaved over a hot stove for hours making, this tastes like they have taken grape Kool-Aid, watered it down and congealed it. Seriously folks, dishwater has more flavor.

It also has a rather bizarre texture. One expects a jam to be somewhat smooth, but this product has a sort of grainy texture that is very off putting. It reminded me of sugar free jell-o without any sweetener and something gritty thrown in to give it substance.

It has a thin consistency that makes it difficult to get out of the jar. It is almost an oily consistency. Normally you can scoop a little jam onto your knife and it will stay there until you get it to the toast. However, the Smuckers slipped and slid off the knife like it had been greased and I finally had to use a spoon to get it on my bread.

A 12.75 oz. Jar of the Smuckers Sugar Free Concord Grape Jam is close to $3.00 at my Wal-Mart Super center and it just is not worth it when there are so many other sugar free treats out there for those on special diets that are tasty without being bad for your blood sugar. If it's Smuckers it's got to be good, right? Not in this case.

Now to get rid of the jam, spread it on crackers and pass it out on Halloween.

Appreciate you taste testing this and bringing us the results. I hope Smuckers gets the message and improves it. Thank you for a good review.

Did you check the expiration date?

I used to buy the sugar free versions all the time but the taste is horrid. SO now I buy the originals and use less!

Thanks for this review. My father needs to watch his sugar and I recently held the jar in my hand in the store and then put it down again. Now I won't be tempted to buy it again. Well written!

I have always wondered, but never dared buy that stuff. Thanks. You saved me the money. Good article. I think I am going back to my roots and will make my own this summer.
