Snacks for diabetic patients is important between meals because they keep blood glucose levels at or near normal a level. If you take lowering sugar medicines your blood sugar may go too low between meals so snack can be handy to normalize your blood sugar level.
One of the main recommendation for snacks for diabetic patients is to keep calories of ingested snack as low as possible. Low-fat snacks can be tricky since people tends to eat more of them since they are less fulfilling. Also, fats are usually replaced with starch in low - fat foods so this is not a good source of snacking for diabetes.
Snack Suggestions:
- Take some onions, celery, onion, green beans, spinach, or any other green. Add some broth, cook it and let is sit in the refrigerator. This soup is low in carbohydrates.
- Prepare some sugar-free fruit-flavored gelatin or low - fat - fruit - flavored yogurt. Add some extra fruit if you wish a flavored dessert.,
- Eat some low-fat string cheese
If you need to snack outside your home try any of these:
- fresh or dried fruits
- baby carrots
- rice cakes (only 2)
- 13 reduced - fat Wheat Thins
- cucumbers
- celery sticks
- cauliflower
- broccoli
- cherry tomatoes
As I said before snacking is very important for diabetic patients. It will help control sugar levels at bay and it will help you feel better. You will need to chose carefully so as not to add too much sugar to your diet. Choose snacks between 80 and 120 calories and you will be safe to have those snacks in between meals or at bed time.
Always ask your doctor or nutritionist for advice!!!
