Part 1: The Joy of Christmas - the Real Joy of Giving

You can bet that if local government or some group of businesses is not sponsoring an event, a local church will be! This Christmas is no different. From fireworks to living nativities, children's pageants to productions of "The Nutcracker", I have seen every imaginable kind of celebration you can imagine.

The celebration of this season that has most touched my heart, however, is the celebration of goodwill and charity I have seen displayed throughout our community.

Everyone knows about Toys For Tots, and Angel Tree, but how many people know about Feed My Sheep, put on by local St. Luke's United Methodist Church every Thursday evening? Families come together, bringing supplies to make sandwiches, and then take as many as they can to Randy Sam's Homeless Shelter.

Many aren't aware of the charities that the Texarkana College Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda have undertaken to help Toys For Tots, or other local charities.

Church Sunday School classes get together and adopt less fortunate families for Christmas gift giving, cook meals for shut-ins, put up and decorate Christmas trees for those who cannot physically do so themselves.

Schools sponsor canned food drives to give to the organizations that help the needy. Financially sound families anonymously adopt less fortunate student families from their children's school, in order to make sure everyone has a Merry Christmas.

I could list so very many things that people do to give of their time, money, and talents in this charitable town, but I will close with Girl Scout Troop 2413's Butterfly Project. Troop 2413 is making and collecting hand-made butterflies to give to the Huston Holocaust Museum. The goal of the project is to collect 1.5 million butterflies to represent each of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust.

The variety of goodwill and generosity displayed in this community is never-ending in so many ways. So many people, such big hearts. I am proud to live here.

Merry Christmas!

Oh yeah. Tex is for Texas. Ark is for Arkansas, and Ana is for Louisiana, because we are almost on the border there, as well. Ever heard the song lyrics "down in Louisiana, just about a mile from Texarkana, in them old cotton fields back home"? It's a bit more than a mile, but not too far.

Texarkana is a border town, half in Texas, half in Arkansas. It is two separate towns with two separate governments, but with a unique courthouse, jail and post office. The federal building that houses the federal court and post office, as well as IRS sits on the stateline, so the East side is Arkansas federal, and the West side is Texas federal. BiState Justice building is the same, but it houses Bowie County Texas jails and municipal courts and Miller County Arkansas jails and municipal courts. Texarkana, AR is the county seat, but Texas is not for Bowie County. So, Miller County Arkansas has a state courthouse as well.

Sounds like a really nice town. Tell me, what is the history of the name "Texarkana?" I've always wondered.

What a wonderful way to share time, talents and LOVE. I will be lifting up the girl scouts and praying they reach their goal for the Holocaust Museum. What a beautiful tribute to those innocent lives lost. Three Cheers (worth the wait to read this one!)
