Snatch: A Guy Ritchie Jewel

A Diamond, a Gypsy & a Pig Farm

These are the recurring themes in one of my favorite movies, Snatch, written and directed by Guy Ritchie.

Released in 2000, the movie starts with Turkish, played by The Transporter's, Jason Statham wondering, "What do I know about diamonds?"

The unique point of Snatch is that every single character portrayed is involved in some kind of uncouth activity, from bare-fisted boxing promoter Turkish to pawn shop owners Solomon and Vincent, to gypsy fast-talker Mickey O'Neil, played to the hilt by Brad Pitt.

The movie depicts the interaction of five different groups, over the course of several days. Four of these groups are vying for a diamond "snatched" by Frankie Four Fingers (Benicio del Toro) to be delivered to Avi (Dennis Farina) in the US.

Guy Ritchie tells the interwoven story in concurrent vignettes narrated by Turkish where the action involves him. The dialogue is one treasured line after another delivered with razor sharp precision.

The circumstances boil down to a few very basic points:

Turkish wants a new caravan as an office. He sends his partner Tommy to purchase the caravan from Mickey

Tommy wants a caravan in one piece. He pits Turkish's prize fighter, Gorgeous George against Mickey in a bid to get a caravan without spending more of Turkish's money and loses. Badly. Now he needs a new fighter.

Mickey wants to box. That's all.

Avi wants the diamond Frankie Four Fingers has stolen. The Russians that assisted him double cross him and hire Sol and his partner to steal the diamond.

Sol wants his partner, Vinny to get rid of the dog he acquired while dealing with Mickey and his gypsy band.

Turkish finds himself indebted to the dangerous BrickTop, who makes a habit of feeding those who cross him to hungry pigs.

There are so many twists and turns to this movie it is not possible to watch it just once.

There are far too many outrageous and quotable lines in this movie, from Turkish, "Protection from what? Zee Germans?" or Brick Top, "In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary, come again?"

These are far from the only two pearls available. If you want a good, twisty, funny and unpredictable move, Snatch is the one to pick up.
