Sneak Peak Album Review of Contra by Vampire Weekend

Rich Jones
Vampire Weekend is a band that is very popular because of their roots as an Alternative music band in New York. In fact, the first time I heard their music was during a trip to New York when I noticed that they were performing at a local club. I decided to attend the show and I was amazed when I heard thousands of fans singing Horchata. What I loved most about the song is their brilliant use of many instruments including tambourines and bottles. I found their music to be a lot like tribal music because it was very sooth but also uplifting, as you would find at many trial ceremonies. I also liked that this band doesn't fit into a neat box of just being Alternative music. I find that their music is a mixture of all great forms of music. What make it unique are their complicated beats that add so much to every track. It seems like every little detail is considered during the recording of each track. This is the reason I became a fan of this band and I decided to pre order their upcoming album titled Contra via their Myspace Music page. I decided it would be a good idea to listen to their album before it arrives so I headed to their website. I wanted to know if the content on the album was worth the money that I spent on the CD.

The album includes 10 tracks and the total length is about 37 minutes in total. I hated the fact that this album is so short because it could include a lot more material by the band. I also feel like I am being shorted for musical material and I would like to have gotten more songs. The album was $9 and I think it is very much worth the money I spent. This CD duplicated going to their live show but it is a lot less expensive. My favorite tracks on this CD are White Sky, Giving Up the Gun, andDiplomat's Son. I also enjoy the artistry displayed on tracks like California English and Taxi Cab because it shows just how talented this band is. If you like this band you will also enjoy music by Dirty Projectors, Laura Veirs, Neon Indian, and Arcade Fire. I would rate this CD 4/5 because it should have been a lot longer and included more material.
