Sneak Peak Album Review of End Times CD by Eels

Rich Jones
There is a sad truth for Country music fans today and it is simply that this genre of music is basically non-existent. The reality is that if you are a fan of the original form of Country music then the Country music that is released today is simply flat. The problem is that Country music became very popular because of artists like Willy Nelson but today it has become filled with young blondes. This has changed the sound and content of the music to the point where Country music is no longer the same. This means that those millions of Country fans are left to either settle for the watered down version of Country or look for something new. This results in these fans often being pushed into listening to musical genres such as Emo music. According to Itunes Music Store one of the most popular artists of this type is Eels. I first discovered his music on Itunes when they suggested that I listen to his last album titled Hombre Lobo, which is a decent album that is well worth a listen. Eels has sold millions of records around the world according to Billboard Charts via their website Billboard.com. Eels is also known to fans as Mark Oliver Everett and his music is basically old Country music in topic that has been set over electronic beats. His music sounds a lot like a blend between Country and Emo music and this is the reason I decided to listen to his upcoming CD titled End Times via Youtube. I wanted to see how the CD would be before considering buying this release when it arrives in stores.

The CD had 14 tracks and is about 60 minutes in length from start to finish. What I like about this CD is that it is creative and I like the way he decides to create a new form of music. However, what I hate about this CD is that a machine is used to deliver the lyrics and it gives his voice the annoying sound of an old man. Most of the lyrics discuss the loss of his wife in a divorce and I find that a lot of the material is very depressing. Some of the best tracks are Little Bird, High And LonesomeandMansions of Los Feliz. But I found tracks like In My Younger Days and Gone Man to be annoying. If you like this artist you will also like Alec Ounsworth, Kasabian, and Animal Collective. I would rate this 3/5 because it is decent.
