Sneak Peak Album Review of I'm Free by Murphy Lee

Rich Jones
Murphy Lee is a southern rap star that many fans may remember as part of the group St. Lunatics which was a group that was lead by Nelly during the time period when Nelly was promotion hit his hit and album Country Grammar. According to Billboard charts, Nelly also a couple million copies of that CD which means that members of the group St. Lunatics were instantly in the position of becoming well known stars and being able to sell records. This worked to their advantage because their album Free City was released in 2001 and eventually sold over a million copies according to Billboard charts available via their website at billboards.com. Then, in 2003 Murphy Lee released his solo album Murphy's Law which was pretty successful and featured P Diddy (or Puff Daddy), Nelly, Sleepy Brown, City Spud, Jazze Pha, Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Toya, Jermaine Dupri, King Jacob and Avery Story. If you have not listened to this CD I suggest you pick it up. The CD sold 500,000 copies according to Billboard charts and peaked at #8. For this reason, I decided to pre order the CD titled Im Free from Mixunit and I thought I would listen to the album via Youtube before it arrives in stores to let you know how it is.

The CD has 26 tracks are runs about 45 minutes so you can see that each track is very short. There is about 5 skits and I feel those are just a waste, I wish they would have been replaced by songs. There are no guest appearances here, not even Nelly appears here and almost all of the songs are freestyles. The best tracks are Lay Ya Head and Age of 21. What makes this CD good is the approach; it is a laid back CD in which Murphy often raps over a soothing singing voice. The lyrics are about love and enjoying life, enjoying the situation that you are place in during life. Most of the songs are about females, many of the songs are sexual and some are about drinking. What I like is that there is no need to rap about guns and hardcore lyrics like you would find in a New York style Rap. This is what made Nelly successful and it will help Murphy here, I would rate this CD a 3/5 and if you are a fan you should pick this album up.
