Sneak Peak Album Review of Modern Marvels by Theory Hazit and Toni Shift

Rich Jones
Theory Hazit is an artist that I first discovered when listening to the Underground Hip Hop segments that play late at night on Hot 97 on the radio in New York. I decided to look him up on Myspace Music and I listened to a few of his tracks that I enjoyed a lot. The song I liked most was Modern Marvels and I found out that it would be released on his upcoming CD also titled Modern Marvels and I decided to pre order the CD via Amazon. If I had to nail down his sound then I would say he sounds like a mix of Premier (of Gangstarr), Nas, Common and Dead Prez or maybe a young Wu Tang. According to his website, Theory Hazit is like three artists in one, he is a producer who makes amazing beats and has no problem raping over his own material. In his title song he samples Wu Tang as he talks about Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson and yet it songs a lot like Eric Shermon (Of EPMD) over a Gangstar beat. For this reason I decided to pre order his CD from Amazon and decided that I would listen to the CD via Youtube before it was released so I would know what to expect and I was pretty happy with the CD.

The CD includes 15 tracks in total that end up sounding a lot like the older Brand Nubian tracks that were once seen as revolutionary. The features on the CD include DJ Idull, Wildchild, Lightheaded, Aletta, Wonder Brown, LMNO, Lolligag, Juice Lee, Motion Plus and JustMe. The best tracks on the CD are Grow Old, Concealed Weapon, You Are and Late Summer Sun but there are a lot of other tracks worth listening to. If you like Redman and EPMD and that type of music then you will love this. There is a feeling created here by the DJ mixing that gives me hope for Hip Hop and music in general. If you are looking for something new or open to listening to something and have never heard Theory Hazit then this is a CD that you need. Having airplay via Hot 97 shows that they have a good following and in time that will only grow, this is a great CD and I rate it a solid 4/5. It is well worth the money and time you should.

Very dope album. Everything Theory Hazit is on is ill, too bad he's so underrated. I wanted to point out some typos: "raping over his own material"???? "Eric Sherman"???? - and I'm sorry but this sounds nothing like old Brand Nubian or Redman or EPMD. I'd put it this way: If you like Othello, Lightheaded, Scribbling Idiots, Ohmega Watts, Asheru & Blue Black, Surreal, Insight, Y Society, The Sound Providers, J-Live, Kenn Starr, etc then you will love this.
