Sneak Peak Album Review of the Purple Tape CD by Big Pooh

Rich Jones
Prince is an artist that many people feel have changed the world of music because of his unique style and the amazing custom beats that made his music different than any other. This is what made Prince so great to the millions of fans that purchased his albums over the years. According to Billboard Charts available via their website at Billboads.com. Sampling issued has been a hard thing to get around for The Beetles, Tom Petty, Steely Dan and Paul McCartney. However, Prince (The Artist) has been encouraging of other artists in allowing them to use his classic music in hopes that it will help push forward music and develop something new and original. This also means he will be getting paid for allowing the samples of such things as his classic and multi-platinum about The Purple Tape. However, Price has indicated in various XM Radio interviews that he cleared the samples just as a favor to Big Pooh. Big Pooh is a former member of the group Little Brother along with Phonte and 9th Wonder but he has been most successful in standing alone and creating rap music that is both unique for the time period and that pushes the expectations of what rap should be. For this reason I decided to pre order his album titled The Purple Tape via Mixtapekingz but I thought it would be a good idea to listen to the CD via Youtube before it arrives so I would know what I was getting.

The album title is a play on the same album by Prince (The Artist) and so is the album artwork that comes along with the CD. Basically Price allowed Big Pooh to rap over the beats they were done for his CD and the result is very interesting. Black Milk does the production on the CD and he does a great job of mixing modern vocals with retro beats. This is a great mix CD because this album has a feeling that is almost ground breaking and I believe it will create a new form of music. Big Pooh uses intelligent lyrics to fill up every instrumental in a creative way. The best tracks are Blueprint, Girlfriend, and Say Something but there is a lot to listen to on this 11 track CD. The featured artists include DJ Flash, Jozeemo, Chaundon, Erica Thompson, Joe Scudda and Ms. Cris, which will give Big Pooh an instantly increased fan base. I would rate this 4/5 because it is very creative.
