Sneak Peak Album Review of Rain on the City by Freedy Johnston

Rich Jones
A roommate that was going through some problems first introduced me to Emo music in college. I asked him what he liked about this genre of music and he told me that it made him feel better when he listed to it. Sometimes in life when you are going through something difficult there isn't anyone you can talk to. It feels like the problem you experience is something that nobody will understand and Emo music help with this. Sometimes when you have a problem in a relationship only music can heal the hurt. After listening to his explanation I decided to listen to Elliot Smith and The White Stripes and I found that he was correct. I listen to these Emo artists when I was feeling depressed and things felt as if they were getting better. It is hard to not have someone to turn to but Emo music provides an outlet. This is how I became a fan of Freedy Johnston and I loved his CD titled My Favorite Waste of Time. This was an album that included covers of various artists' tracks including Marshall Crenshaw, Dionne Warwick, Matthew Sweet, Cole Porter, and The Hollies. For this reason I decided to pre order his new CD titled Rain on the City via Amazon but I thought I would listen to the CD via Youtube before it arrives in store.

The CD features 11 tracks and is about 41 minutes in length from start to finish. I think this is something that takes away from the quality and rating of the CD because the time is so short considering he has not recorded material in a long time. As a fan I find the short length disappointing but I love the lyrics on these songs. Lonely Penny is a track that uses personification to express his feelings to his money. It is actual an amazing love song and probably the best on the CD. Other great tracks on this CD include Love With a Lonely Girl, The Other Side Of Love, The Kind of Love We're In and It's Gonna Come Back to You. I would rate this CD 4/5 because of the short length but this is one of the best Emo CDs that I have heard in a long time. Pick this CD up because you will enjoy it if you like Emo music or music that makes easy listening.
