Sneak Peak Album Review of Southern Slang CD by the Nappy Roots

Rich Jones
The Nappy Roots are a southern Rap group that has been very successful in the music world. The group was formed in 1995 and has sold millions of records according to Billboard Charts available via their website at Billboard.com. Their last album was released in 2003 and included work that featured production by Kanye West, Lil Jon and David Banner. The album titled Wooden Leather also featured the track Roun the Globe that allowed the group to appear on the soundtrack for EA Sports video game Madden 2004. I have been a fan of their music ever since I heard this title on Madden. However, I began to follow their music after I heard their track Good Day and so I decided to pre order their new CD titled Southern Slang but I thought I would listen to the CD via Youtube before it ships to see how good the CD is.

The CD includes 24 tracks in total and the length of the CD is about 62 minutes in total. There are three tracks that are less than 2 minutes in length so you can expect 24 new tracks. This is a mix CD that feels a lot like an album because it is full length and filled with great music. It has been since 2003 that anything new has been released from this band and their new material is great. What I enjoy so much is that there is a positive message behind each track and they use their music to provide strength to fans. There are many artists that fill CDs with negative thoughts and messages but Nappy Roots use their CD to make a difference and the music is great. The CD features guest appearances by Kenzo, B-stille, Skinny Deville, Yung Nig, Clutch 2, Kasper 2 and Fishscales Yo. However, I think that these appearances take more away from the CD than they add because I would like to see these appearances removed. The best tracks are the ones that include only the Nappy Roots. The best tracks are King Of Da Town, The Blvd, and Burn but there is a good amount of decent tracks here. This CD is not the quality I would expect from a group after seven years because there are a lot of freestyle and filler tracks. I would rate this 3/5 for the amount of decent material included on the CD.
