"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"

Stars include Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, Amber Beattie, David Thewlis, and Vera Farmiga. This fictional story is told through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy named Bruno, son of a Nazi commandant, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp. Both boys are separated by barbed wire but their lives become somehow intertwined during World War II. In this movie you get a first-hand look at brutality and how prejudice affects everyone, especially innocent victims such as children. This Miramax film is rated PG-13 and is 95 minutes long.

"Gardens of the Night"

Stars include Gillian Jacobs, Evan Ross, Ryan Simpkins, and Tom Arnold. Directed by Damian Harris, this movie centers around Leslie, who currently struggles with a hand to mouth existence on the streets of San Diego, California. Her childhood friend, Donnie, looks out for her. Both were abducted and held captive nine years ago by two men, Alex and Frank. Because of this, a bond is created by both children. Now, seventeen years old, they are now street kids who struggle to cope with life, past and present. Donnie loves Leslie but Leslie is afraid to love anyone. Leslie is still haunted by the past. Question is...will her past keep her from having a future? This City Lights Pictures drama is Not Yet Rated and is 110 minutes long.

"Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa"

Stars include Ben Stiller and is directed by Eric Darnell. The old crew is back...Alex the lion; Marty the zebra; Melman the giraffe; Gloria the hippo; King Julien; and Maurice and the penguins. Now, in the vast plains of Africa, where the zoo-raised gang encounters similar species such as themselves, they deal with issues surrounding long-lost relatives, romantic rivals, and scheming hunters. This DreamWorks film is rated PG.

"Role Models"

Stars include Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Bobb'e J. Thompson. Directed by David Wain, the story is about two salesmen, Danny and Wheeler, who trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. After their arrest, the court gives them one option, do hard time or spend 150 service hours with a mentorship program. After spending one day with Augie, who experiences trials and tribulations of becoming a man, and with foul-mouthed, Ronnie; they start to reconsider the hard time. But, the kids are not the only ones who have issues. Danny was just dumped by his girlfriend and is very bitter. Charming Wheeler is addicted to partying and romancing women. Thus, the center's ex-con director gives them one more chance to change their ways and become the perfect role models. This Universal comedy is rated R and is 95 minutes long.

"Soul Men"

Stars include Samuel L. Jackson, the late Bernie Mac, the late Isaac Hayes, Sharon Leal, and John Legend. It is also directed by Malcolm D. Lee. About 20 years ago, Louis and Lloyd, once a popular singing duo, went their separate ways and never spoke again. Until the death of a former group member, reunites them and sends them to New York to perform a tribute concert at the Apollo Theatre in honor of their deceased band leader. This Dimension comedy is rated R and is 103 minutes long.

"Slumdog Millionaire"

Stars include Mia Drake, Dev Patel, and Imran Hasnee. It is directed by Danny Boyle. It's a story of how an Indian teen, Jamal Malik becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Jamal is not thinking of money, instead he just wants to prove his love for friend, Latika, who is a fan of the show. This Celador Films comedy/drama/romance is 120 minutes long.

"The Dukes"

Stars include Chazz Palminteri, Peter Bogdanovich, Miriam Margolyes, Frank DA, Amico, Elya Baskin, Dominic Scott Kay, and Melora Hardin. It is directed by Robert Davi. The Doo Wop group, "The Dukes," topped the charts in the 1960's. In 2007, they faded from the spotlight. They ended up playing occasional gigs and waiting tables at their Aunt Vee's restaurant to make ends meet. Desperately trying to reclaim their former status, they stumble upon the heist of a lifetime. The soundtrack includes music from the 1960's. This Cavu Pictures comedy/drama is rated PG-13 and is 96 minutes long.

"Quantum of Solace"

Stars include Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, and Mathieu Amalric. It is also directed by Marc Foster. James Bond seeks revenge for the death of his true love and sets out to stop an environmentalist from taking over the country's water supply. This MGM action/adventure/thriller is rated PG-13 and is 103 minutes long.

"Twilight"

Stars include Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Peter Facinelli, Billy Burke, Elizabeth Reaser, and Nikki Reedmore. This is a modern day love story between a vampire and a human. After Bella Swan's mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen, a boy unlike anyone she's ever met. Soon, Bella and Edward are caught up in the throes of passion. Unknowingly to Bella, Edward is quite different from most boys. You see, he can run faster than a mountain lion, stop a moving car with his bare hands, plus, he hasn't aged since 1918. He is immortal. Edward is also not your average vampire. For instance, he doesn't have fangs and he doesn't drink human blood. Bella is the soul mate Edward has waited 90 years for. There's just one catch. The closer he and Bella get, the more Edward struggles to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. And that's just the beginning. Apparently James, Laurent, and Victoria are the Cullens' family mortal vampire enemies, who are now searching for Bella. Will Edward be safe? This Summit Entertainment action/horror is rated PG-13 and is 120 minutes long.

"Australia"

Stars include Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Jack Thompson, and Bryan Brown and is directed by Baz Luhrmann. During pre-World War II, an English aristocrat inherits a sprawling ranch and the rugged cattle driver helps protect her property from greedy English cattle barons. Together, they attempt to herd 2,000 heads of cattle across hundreds of miles of the treacherous Australian outback. They also witness the bombing of Darwin by Japanese forces, just months the Japanese's deadly attack on Pearl Harbor. This Fox action/drama/war film is Not Yet Rated.

"Four Christmases"

Stars include Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, and Jon Voight. Upscale, happily unmarried San Francisco couple, Kate and Brad suddenly find themselves socked in by fog on Christmas morning. So much for their exotic vacation plans. Thus, they undergo four relative-choked festivities, where they find childhood fears raised and adolescent wounds reopened. As Brad counts the hours until he is free of their parents, step-parents, siblings, and a slew of nieces and nephews, Kate is starting to see a different side to things. This New Line comedy/drama is rated PG-13.

"Milk"

Stars include Sean Pean, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, and James Franco. Harvey Bernard Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He became the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in the United States. Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and a hero for all Americans. In 1972, at the age of 40, Milk and his lover, Scott Smith, relocated from New York City to San Francisco. There, they start a small business, Castro Camera, in the heart of a working-class neighborhood. Empowered by the beautiful city, Milk becomes an outspoken agent for change. When Milk is elected supervisor for the newly- zoned District 5, he tries to coordinate his efforts with those of another newly elected supervisor, Dan White. This Focus Features drama is rated R.

"Transporter 3"

Stars include Jason Statham, Francois Berle'and, and Robert Knepper and is directed by Oliver Megaton. The story continues with Frank Martin, a professional "transporter" who relocates to Paris and continues to deliver packages without questions. This Lionsgate action film is rated PG-13.

    You should keep writing one of these every month - it's a great way to find out what's going to be on (although I'm in Thailand so, all that means is that all these movies will be available on fake DVD for $2 :-)

    I actually read the book "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". While I'm eager to see the movie, it may be too intense for some, including children, even though it stars two children in the major roles. I don't know if they could come close to capturing the book's style on film, probably didn't try. The book is more a parable or fantasy style.
