Sneak Peak: New Mario Game for the Wii is Out of This World

Lee Andrew Henderson
When it comes to video games at E3, Nintendo once again falls short of Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo didn't seem to have a whole lot of games for the Wii getting a lot of buzz, although they did have some new controllers. There is one game that has been getting a lot of buzz and will sure to be the most popular Wii game so far and of course it features everyone's favorite plumber. No, I'm not talking about Mike Delfino from Desperate Housewives. I'm talking about Nintendo's icon, Mario.

The latest edition of Mario coming out on Wii is called Super Mario Galaxy. At the E3 press conference Nintendo said that Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii was the closest title to the Nintendo 64 game so far. That means there will be a lot of platforms and jumping all over the place and really, who jumps better than Mario?

Mario won't be confined to jumping from platform to platform though. In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario is in space, which means the lack of gravity will allow Mario to make acrobatic moves that would make Courtney Kupets jealous. (Courtney Kupets is a gymnast people, try and keep up.) Also added to Mario's array of moves is the back flip. Eat your heart out Morgan Dennis (another gymnast).

Like many of the worlds in past Mario games the different worlds are themed. There is the Star Dust Galaxy, the Egg Planet Galaxy and the Honey Bee Galaxy. Of course the Honey Bee Galaxy has everyone buzzing. (Get it? Buzzing. Ha!) In the Honey Bee Galaxy Mario dons a suit that turns him into a bee. Those who played the hands-on game at E3 assure us it's not as dumb as it sounds and it is no more offensive than the frog suit in Super Mario 3. I find it hard to believe though because the frog suit in Super Mario 3 didn't remind me of a Blind Melon music video.

In all seriousness though, I'm sure it will work out. The truth is you could sit down and tell anybody the premise of any Mario game and they'd tell you, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." "Why would a mushroom make you grow?" "If you're made of paper won't you be blown away?" "If the mushroom guy keeps telling you the princess is another castle then why don't you just quit?" You have all these questions and then you pick up that controller and it's a magical experience. After all, Mario has made us believe that plumbers can be heroes, who else would believe that? (Besides Desperate Housewives fans.) I'm sure Mario in space will be no different. As silly as it sounds, it will be great. This is one small step for plumbers, one giant leap for tradesmen.

Any word if the koopa kids will finally return? The kids have been missing for ages now. Wonder what happened to them?
