Sneak Peek Album Review of Deathwish by Canibus

Rich Jones
The art of the lyrical battle is something that goes back to the start of Hip Hop. The reason for this is that Rap music is about ego and attitude, which makes insulting someone else the greatest way to advance perceptions of you. For any artist that wins a Rap battle it can be successful in shaping an image that he would like fans to buy into. It also creates an image of the rapper that loses the battle and tarnishes any credibility built with the audience. Rap beef is something that can build music success or take it away for any artist.

This includes artists from Rick Ross to 50 Cent in addition to Canibus and LL Cool J. Canibus is an artist that achieved a lot of fame and success by aiming insults toward LL Cool J on a track called 4321. Canibus insulted LL on the record and this lead to beef between the two in which Canibus recorded a song called Second Round KO. The song featured Mike Tyson insulting LL Cool J and the result was millions of records sold for Canibus according to Billboard Charts available via their website at Billboards.com. I have been a fan of his ever since 2000 and I believed that he won the beef with LL. For this reason I decided to pre order his upcoming album titled Deathwish via Itunes Music Store. I thought it would be a good idea to listen to the CD via Youtube before it arrives in stores to see what I would be getting for the $10 that I spent.

The CD includes 12 tracks and the total length is about 50 minutes from start to finish. This is something that I found disappointing because I wished there was a lot more music here. The CD has enough space for 20 additional minutes of music but this is not used to fill up the album for whatever reason. This album includes a guest appearance by Hooverphonics but for some reason Keith Murray doesn't appear on the album. This album seems very throw together but I do think the best tracks are Next Level Beasting and The Ripper. As a fan I did enjoy most of the tracks on the CD and I think any fan will enjoy this CD. The lyrics are filled with a ton of vocabulary and smart content that you should expect from Canibus. I would rate this 3/5 because of the short length.
