Sneak Peek Review of the Children's Alphabet Book "F is for Friendship: A Quilt Alphabet"
Due to Be Released March 1, 2011
Synopsis and Review of the Children's Alphabet Book F is for Friendship: A Quilt Alphabet
Each letter of the alphabet is used to describe an aspect of quilting, first using a rhyming poem to introduce each letter, i.e., "C" for Calico, "K" for Kapa Moe, "P" for Patchwork, "V" for Victorian Crazy Quilts, etc. Then informative paragraphs along with illustrations inform the reader about how quilts have played a role in preserving family memories, shedding light on various cultures, and bringing people together. Readers will learn through this children's alphabet book that Susan B. Anthony used a quilting bee to launch her campaign for equal rights for women and also get insight into where the first quilt was found. At the end of the book is a note by the author of how she came to write the book, based on her own family history, plus a quilting quiz is included based on the reading.
I recommend this book because it will help children appreciate how quilts are more than just something to look at or keep them warm, and may even help foster an interest in taking up quilting. The illustrations by Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen are colorful and poignant and help quilting history come alive for the reader, as the book measures out to be about 10 ¼ inches high and 11 ¼ inches wide; and thus, large illustrations to ponder.
This book is 32 pages long, and is scheduled to be available at retail outlets like Amazon.com on March 1, 2011. Its Suggested Retail Price is $16.95. The ISBN Number for F is for Friendship: A Quilt Alphabet is 1585365327. For more information on the publisher, Sleeping Bear Press, contact 315 Eisenhower Parkway, Suite 200, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. I was provided a copy of this children's alphabet book by Sleeping Bear Press, but was under no obligation to recommend it. My observations are my own.
