Due to Be Released May 10

This is a sneak peek review of the new release children's historical fiction book The Town that Fooled the British: A War of 1812 Story. It is authored by Lisa Papp and is published by Sleeping Bear Press. I was provided a copy of this children's historical fiction book by Sleeping Bear Press, but was under no obligation to recommend it. My observations are my own.

Synopsis and Review of The Town that Fooled the British

The War of 1812 is raging on as the British army with its naval power is wreaking havoc in and around the Chesapeake Bay. During the summer of 1813, the British have their sights set on a town in Maryland called St. Michaels because it's a vital shipbuilding town. A boy named Henry Middle wants to do his part to help defend St. Michaels, as his father is part of the town's militia called to action, but Henry is basically told to stay home with his mother and siblings. But the boy won't be deterred, and it is his persistence with some lanterns he's trying to get to his father that helps save the town from being shelled into rubble. This children's historical fiction book is based on actual events that happened during the War of 1812 in St. Michaels, even though the boy is a fictional creation of the writer.

I do recommend this book for a couple of important reasons. First, the 32 pages are an engaging story of a time in American history that doesn't get a lot of coverage when compared to the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War II, etc. And the illustrations by Robert Papp do help the story come alive with their fine detail and sense of real drama.

This children's reading product is due to be available at retail outlets like Amazon.com on May 10, and its Suggested Retail Price is $16.95. The ISBN Number for The Town that Fooled the British is 1-58536-484-3. For more information on the publisher, Sleeping Bear Press, contact 315 Eisenhower Parkway, Suite 200, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Excellent review. I actually love books covering stories from that era, and children should learn about history all over the world.
