Snedeker Family: How "True" is the Connecticut Haunting?

Lisa Brown
The movie "A Haunting in Connecticut" is based on the Snedeker family, of Southington, Connecticut. In the 2009 movie, the family's name has been changed to the Campbell's.

The Snedeker's lived in the house at 208 Meriden Avenue in Southington, Connecticut. At first, Carmen Snedeker was thrilled, the rent was low, the house was spacious, it was just what the family needed. As the story goes, after the Snedeker's moved in they learned the house was once used as a mortuary. Mortician equipment and tools were still in the basement, but hidden behind building and construction materials.

Soon, the family claimed they were plagued by strange and disturbing phenomena. The Snedeker's described it as a demonic presence. The Snedeker family lived at the house for about two and a half years.

"They were incredibly powerful. One of the demons was very thin, with high cheekbones, long black hair and pitch black eyes. Another had white hair and eyes, wore a pinstriped tuxedo, and his feet were constantly in motion." --Carmen Snedeker

The Snedeker's contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren, renowned paranormal experts who worked on the Ammityville haunting. Carmen Snedeker said she later learned that one of the people working in the mortuary had been found guilty of necrophilia.

The family's story was the topic of the 1992 book "In A Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting," and the TV documentary A Haunting in Connecticut.

The author of the book, "In a Dark Place," Ray Garton, wanted to publish the book as fiction, but because of his agent at the time and a contract he was bound by, the story was labeled "a true story."

According to Mr. Garton: "Elements of Carmen Snedeker's story clashed with elements of Al Snedeker's story, and it seemed everyone was having a problem keeping their stories straight. Frankly, I didn't notice until I had nearly finished all my interviews and began going over my notes, then I started having trouble matching up the details."

Garton said the paranormal investigators told him to just "make it up (the story) and make it scary" when he approached them with his concerns over the inconsistencies.

The movie version of the Snedeker story will be released in March of 2009. So before you all freak out in the aisles, remember its just a story, even if its "true."

meh.. I could believe a little, like the voices and visions but the talking demon, the water turning red, DESCRIBE how the demons look like... That is bullshit.

The movie was cheesy made-up rubbish and the Snedekers' storie(s) ditto. They needed money, so Mum (to whom most of the 'events' seem to have happened, without corroborating evidence) decided to pull an Amityville on everyone. Why don't hauntings/possessions ever happen to atheists? You'd think that all the demons of hell would logically come after us rather than go bothering God-fearing folk.

the had to stay there because they had no money to move house as they had already put rent down and the reason they moved into the house in the first place, that their son couldn't travel with him having cemo it made him even more ill, so theres plenty of reasons they stayed in the house.

Weird things happened in my old house, scarey stuff. I know how these people feel, I know alot is Hollywood made up but I do not doubt some things happened to make these people tell anything. My best answer for why they lived there so long is, like me no money to move on. My child and I had mirror image nightmares, we saw things, we heard things, but we had to live there for 14 years before we could afford to move. Not a funny situation but we survived with a strong belief in our savior.

I just watched this movie and as for the true story events that may be but this is definetly a hollywood version and a fraction of true events has been shown. We all must remember its a hollywood and they want to make money nothing else matters!!! As for haunting yeah I can feel for the family who had to deal with illness of their son and on top of that add hauntings.

I have been doing a ton of research on the haunting and i really doubt that this story is true a quote by the wife was "When I mopped the kitchen floor the water turned red dark dark red and smelled off decaying flesh my first thought was its going to rune the floor." pleas do you really think that that is the first thought you would have if your mop water turned dark red and smelled like decaying flesh? I dont know about you but I would be screaming and running to get out of there. Also many people have interviewed them and the story changes a little every time they tell it! Also someone want to tell me why they stayed in the house for 2 years with all of that going on??? if u can explain pleas go right on ahead!?!?!? Now I am not saying it did or didn't happen this is just my opinion and thoughts on the subject so pleas do not be offended by my opinion.
