SNES Game Review - Mr Do!

Natasha Fox
Mr Do! is essentially a digdug clone with a lot of added action. It was released by Imagineer Co Ltd. In 1995. The game is a basic port of the arcade game released by Universal in 1982. Mr Do! is a simple maze game that was all the rage during the 1980s.

Intrepid space clown Mister Dopey, (Mr Do! for short) from the planet Giggletopia has been charged with collecting red power cherries. Too bad the indigenous life hates clowns. But fear not, Apples are the native's one weakness. You are also equipped with a sucralose to energy transferrer, one bite of any sugary delight will temporarily freeze time and transport you to an alternate dimension filled with even meaner beasties, but with more opportunity to gather cherries.

Back in 1982 Mr Do! Could hold its own against the likes of Dig Dug and Pac-Man. Fast forward 13 years to the SNES port. Mr Do! cannot compete with "modern" games such as Final fantasy 4 and Super Metroid. But as a straight from arcade port Mr Do! has been recreated flawlessly.

80s arcade games have very obnoxious sound. Mr Do! is no exception. Mr Do! does have a leg up on the competition though, there is a sound preview section available through the options. In the sound options the player can cycle through all 13 music tracks some of which include classical masterpieces such as "Toreador" from Carmen, and surprisingly enough the theme from "Astroboy". There are exactly 23 sound effects that make up the game.

Mr Do! is a fairly simple game to learn, stay alive and avoid monsters all the while collecting cherries to advance levels. The controls are as ridiculously simple as arcade games should be, two axis XY movement, with a single button reserved for launching your projectile attack. Controlling Mr Do! is a fairly simplistic effort, with only a few instances where movement is hindered by design limitations.

Its harder than Dig Dug. Mr Do! is a difficult game that only gets harder as it goes on, there are no breaks, as the game play never changes. Children as well as adults could find this game entertaining if they can just get past the obvious age of Mr Do!

As in all arcade game ports, I was bored quickly with Mr Do! I feel that the game could have been polished up, and I was surprised to discover that it has been remade with shinier graphics in 1996 for the Neo Geo game system. I give Mr Do! 3 apples out of 5.
