"Snickers" Candy Bar Super Bowl Ad DISSATISFIES

Barry Freiman
Snicker's Candy Bars is sure to dissatisfy many gay male viewers of the Super Bowl with the ad that ran during the first half of Super Bowl XLI today. In the advertisement, an automechanic has a Snicker's candy bar hanging out of his mouth. A fellow automechanic eyes it and reaches out with his mouth. He has the candy bar in his mouth on the other end. The pair race up the candy bar and, seemingly inadvertently, their lips meet as the candy bar disappears.

The pair look at each other in absolute fear and disgust as one of them yells in horror that they kissed. The other replies "Quick, do something manly." And they each tear hair from their chests.

As a gay male, I'm not offended but that's because I don't offend easily. I'm disgusted that, more and more, gays are becoming the new punch line and that too many are confusing that with some perverse form of acceptance. The logic is, if they're making fun of me, they must love me. After all haters typically don't hate to one's face.

The reality of this situation isn't that Snicker's has somehow alienated or offended gay viewers. It's that they've shown how little they understand the gay male audience. When the terrified men in the commercial scream to do something "manly", as a gay male in 2007, I concluded that, the minute the two male actors' lips met, they were doing something this gay male considers about as manly as it gets.

Snicker's Super Bowl Ad is sure to dissatisfy REAL MEN who happen to be homosexual. And that accounts for 100% of the gay male community -- because butch or girly, we are all REAL MEN engaged in what we consider the manliest pursuit of all -- living an honest life unafraid of engaging in behaviors others may consider un-manly.

majority of heterosexual males find it funny that a boy on boy kiss is icky, it's economically to Snickers detriment to market in this way. They turn off more people than they turn on (so to speak).

OK stick with this Bob - if males are about 50% of the population (and I believe we're less now in the US) and about 10-20% of people in this country are gay, at the most conservative estimate Snickers is marketing toward at best 40% of its market with this advertisement but at the same time sending a negative message to 10% of its market base. Presumably the split between liberals and conservatives is also about 50-50 in this country given recent elections - so assume that, in reality, of the 40% heterosexual male population, about 20% may be homophobic like you (it's ok, I get that you find male kissing 'oogy', when I see straights kiss, it makes me want to puke on my shoes) and another 20% may actually find a primitive joke about a gay kiss immature, tasteless, and a reason to avoid Snickers. That puts that 20% in the camp with the 10% gay male population putting it at a 30% Snickers turn-off rate and only a 20% Snickers turn-on rate -- Therefore even assuming you are right that a

It's called marketing. Its not meant to be offensive. Everything in this world could be possibly be construed as offensive to someone... Especially to people that look for reasons to be offended. It is a commercial, the vast majority of the male population would find it awkward to kiss another male, therefore they relate to the commercial. What should snickers have done? Have a puppy in a sweater cuddling with a snickers wrapper in a laundry basket with the Easter Bunny? Wait, that wouldn't work... PETA would be all over them for having that puppy out past its curfew, and I am sure a minority of the Jewish population would not want their children exposed to the Easter Bunny. Oh well, what can you do? Well, you could always get over yourself and move on with your life, but then you wouldn't have anything to keep yourself busy,. Would you?

k.j. smith i'm not deleting your comments - despite how outrageous they are - because i want ur comments to stand on their own and I think you've stated your case eloquently.

I thought that the ad was very funny. I think that I have a right as a non gay person not to be exposed to gay behavior. If gays want to be gay, stay in the closet. I love the people but despise the acts.. Its not right. Why do all of us have to bend over backward to bad language, open sex, violence or gay behavior? What about our rights to have Christ in Christmas. I am tired of being quiet and letting all of these other interests take over my rights to common decencies. My right to turn on the radio or TV and not have something offensive slap me in the face. What about our rights to say prayer in school, or pledge allegance to my country. What has happened to our country? Will my opinion matter, will it make a difference? Maybe, maybe not. But this problem will only continue to get worse as we stand by quietly as we GIVE our freedoms away. Wickedness happens when good men or women stand by and do or say nothing. It's time to stand up for our rights before they are all gone. Stand up
