Snippets of Silence

A Rhymed Sestina (poem)

Janice Meyer
Snippets of Silence

For years she stashed things, her hope chest to fill
with prizes for home she would one day share.
Of tatted lace and tapestries in place,
brocade place mats and tablecloths, mauve.
Napkins with rings-on her hand, one solitaire,
symbol of promises, token of love.

Her treasures abundant, heart drenched in love,
if cache might be lacking, her dreams can fill.
Each facet a wish from bold solitaire,
glistening with fire blending future to share.
The light reflects in blues and shades of mauve,
she waits, a special time-a sacred place.

Her world, how quickly, a tragic space, a place
of heartbreak and sadness, plans nil-her love
is called to soar through Heavens, gently mauve.
Now treasures saved are merely scraps to fill
the haven of her hopes she sought to share,
pledged forever within that solitaire.

Her face aglow smiles from the solitaire,
fine linens, quilted spreads still rest in place,
each piece a mere scrap, no one to share
the home she planned to fill with gifts of love.
The space within her heart that he would fill
an empty tomb of fancies, murky mauve.

At eve when all the earth is still, soft mauve,
she looks inside that brilliant solitaire,
there sees a land afar, prays to fulfill
her wishes they as one, in time and place.
She counts her blessings, having known his love,
and vows to wait 'til Heaven they may share.

The chest remains a grave, not meant to share,
white gown of lace a vision turned to mauve.
The precious tokens merely scraps of love,
bereft in sea of sparkling solitaire.
A haven waits beyond the sky, a place,
abode where peace and joy her heart can fill.

Now particles fill space she sought to share,
foresaken place, lost hours of faded mauve,
bedim deep solitaire fires sparked by love.
