SNL -- Saturday Night Live -- Zach Galifianakis / Vampire Weekend -- 3/6/10 -- Sketch by Sketch Review
Another C-Span opening with Fred Armisen playing a random blackface character (who apparently is President Obama), Kristen Wiig playing Nancy Pelosi, and Will Forte as Harry Reid. There is absolutely nothing funny in this bit, which is so random it appears as though it was a foreign improv translated into English. Worst opening this year.
MONOLOGUE --ZACH GALIFIANAKIS -- 10
The bearded star of the Hangover and he explains his look as "Lighthouse Attendant", "Homeless Professor" or "Wolf Blitzer at Burning Man". His entire monologue of one liners ("I like dark comedies, that's why I like the Wayans Brothers") is the funniest thing this year.
FUNERAL -- CLOSE FAMILY -- 6
I guess SNL fired the writers and instead just simply put scripts from earlier in the year into the computer with a few word changes. This is another repeat of the sketch with a family that loves to kiss each other a bit too much. They even repeat a dog kissing bit from a Alec Baldwin episode years ago. Sadly, it made me laugh, at least until it went WAYYYYY over the top at the end.
HOTEL BIDET -- 7
Kristen Wiig and Zach Galifianakis play a couple at a hotel who are REALLY too concerned about the bidet in their room. Funny, but would have been funnier if the joke had been allowed to build instead of being obvious from the start.
ZACH DROPS BY THE SET -- 9
A series of shots of Zach Galifianakis dropping in on random shows like the NBC Nightly News, Dr. Oz, Showtime at the Apollo, Law and Order, and 30 Rock. The end is hysterical.
TODAY SHOW -- 8
Jenny Slate plays Hoda Kotb and Kristen Wiig does her overbearing Kathie Lee. Some funny jokes at Hoda's expense, and the sight of Kathie Lee treating a box of wine like a juice box are funny, as is the introduction of Zach Galifianakis into the sketch.
VAMPIRE WEEKEND -- COUSINS -- 7
Surf drums, some surf guitar, and some dumb lyrics. They look like the Jonas brothers doing the Ramones via Dick Dale. Entertaining.
WEEKEND UPDATE -- 1
Keenan Thompson shows up playing Monique in an unfunny bit about her Oscar acceptance speech, Will Forte shows up to sing a lame song about women, and a guy claiming to be the head writer of SNL steps on some of the worst jokes ever penned for Weekend Update. Terrible.
WHAT UP WITH THAT -- 5
Is this the fourth time going to the well with "What's Up With That", the fake BET show starring Keenan Thompson as a singing talk show host who never lets his guests talk? Paul Rudd shows up, making me hope he might host soon. New York Times columnist Frank Rich shows up as well. There's not much to laugh at until Zach Galifianakis shows up as a guy who plays two flutes. It's time to kill this one.
CNN'S SITUATION ROOM -- 3
A lame parody of the Situation Room and CNN's dependence on reporting from viewers.
VAMPIRE WEEKEND -- GIVING UP THE GUN -- 6
Decent pop tune.
PAGEANT TALK -- 3
Zach and Jenny Slate play hosts of Pageant Talk, a talk show about Beauty Pageants. The only laughs come from watching Zach try not to laugh.
OVERALL -- 6
It would appear that Zach Galifianakis would have a lot to offer if only the writers were up to the task. Sadly, the best part tonight was the monologue. It's time to shake this cast and the writer's room up, Lorne. Your hosts deserve better.
