SNL Season Premiere Featured Katy Perry Singing California Gurls, Teenage Dream; Sesame Street References Made

The SNL Season Premiere featured Katy Perry singing both California Gurls and Teenage Dream Saturday night on NBC. The comedy show even used the singer to parody her being stymied from appearing (with Elmo) on an actual Sesame Street television broadcast via the "Bronx Beat" skit at iVillage here. You can see Perry's Sesame Street bit at YouTube here. That cancellation came about because of protests raised by parents, as reported by TV by the Numbers. Katy Perry singing California Gurls and Teenage Dream on the 36th Season Premiere of SNL was also about visuals. That is, there were two sets of costumes for the performers for underscoring each song

Katy Perry Sang California Gurls on the SNL Season Premiere, Surrounded by Lots of the Color Pink for Her Rendition from the Teenage Dream Album

Just before the airing of "Weekend Update" the pop singer came out wearing some sparkling shades and was dressed in a short pink, red, and white-colored dress to sing her hit song California Gurls. Her back up singers were dressed in short pink and white dresses and the band providing the music was donned in white suits on a set that that was also dominated by the color - guess what: pink. The song was sung with in an alluring way and had a nice flow and rhythm to it in which the visual aspects hearkened back to some psychedelic aspects of the 1960s.

And before the NBC comedy show SNL ended, the song Teenage Dream was crooned out forcefully by the singer. Costume changes this time featured the pop star donned in a skimpy school girl uniform with a white collared shirt, a loose dark-reddish tie, and a dark reddish plaid skirt that was very skimpy, plus high white socks and white shoes. The band was dressed up in red and white football uniforms and her back up singers were either attired in red and white cheerleader uniforms or had the same kind of schoolgirl uniforms that Katy Perry wore.

One has to wonder if the Season Premiere of SNL was to have a full blow Sesame Street skit in it? Nonetheless, Katy Perry made her point about her cleavage on the "Bronx Beat" skit.

Claire: Thanks for the comment. I made the article more clear on that point.

Good one Roy, but SNL did make fun of her Sesame Street proposed skit. They interviewed her character on SNL wearing a low cut Elmo character shirt, and made comments about her cleavage and Elmo. It was towards the beginning of the show.

Good coverage. The Sesame Street skit was over the top, and I can easily see why it was pulled.

I just listened to a parody of California Gurls on Youtube. It was from a group of girls in Ohio. Funny. Cheers Roy :)
