The SnoopStick device resembles a common USB Flash Drive. All you need to do is go up to the target computer (preferably when no one is looking) and plug it in. From there, the SnoopStick will run a setup program that will allow you to monitor parts of the computer. The entire setup takes about a minute, and then you can unplug the SnoopStick and take it with you.
When you want to see what your kids, employees, or other significant others are up to, simply plug the SnoopStick into your computer and it will display what web sites the target computer has looked at over. The SnoopStick shows instant screen snapshots of the computer being monitored, which you can turn around and save as evidence. The Snoopstick works in real time and can store twelve months of activity.
The SnoopStick works with all web browsers and can even monitor both sides of an Instant Messenger conversation, as well as check the sender and recipient of every email sent or received. You even have the option of logging the user off, disable the internet access, set time restrictions, or even turn the computer off. You can even use SnoopStick to send your kid/employee a quick pop-up message. I would suggest something like "So why are you so interested in this website?" It also enables users to set allowable times for the target computer, and block access to specific websites.
The SnoopStick can be purchased at the Solid Oak website for approximately $59.95 USD, and can be used to monitor three computers.
There were concerns that this SnoopStick could be used to illegitimately spy on people. After all, the SnoopStick advertises that it is virtually undetectable. I think we all know that monitoring tweens and employees under us may be a necessary evil, but there are others who could easily use this device for malicious attempts. Solid Oak Software has assured potential customers that the SnoopStick cannot be used for identity theft. I'm not sure how this could stop identity theft if you can use this to get screenshots, but I'm guessing that you will not be able to see keystrokes.
Even though my identity may not be stolen, my computer is like my sanctum, and contains information that is really none of anyone's business. Fortunately, there are posts (one of them is on my links) that explain how to disable the SnoopStick off of a target computer.
Just don't be surprised if your teenager finds out how to use them.

Post a CommentI think this product could also be named "The Trust Destroyer". Snoop Stick is the perfect thing to destroy the trust between you and your own child. As a kid who used to have this installed on my computer, I watched me and my dad's relationship go way, way down. I felt that I should stop being a good kid because he obviously already suspects me of doing bad things. Why try? I've experienced many flaws with this product and I will list them below.
1. Say you have it set to cut off the internet off at 12am. It will cut the internet off for certain applications that require internet to be constanstly refreshed. (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) I quickly realized that if you had programs open, such as World of Warcraft, AIM, Stickam, etc. that it would continue to let you play. As long as you had it running before 12.
2. A simple Key Registry edit and fix this.
3. It's decetable by looking at your "Process" log.
4. I found numerous spyware programs that would remove
Great article! You can't be too careful these days with kids on the internet.
The url of the site I mentioned did not go through. Here it is www.MyKidsInternetSafety.com
Many parents find SnoopStick to be a life saving solution with the troubled or bullied teenagers. Read the testimonials at SnoopStick testimonials.
Also, check what the experts say about SnoopStick in the Media.
Snooping on a child is VERY important. There is someone everyday giving your child bad information. Information is the least of your worries, it is what else they are giving them that may be of concern. Intercept the bad, igmore the harmless. Be a good parent. Your kid is working hard to do bad things. You have to work equally as hard to gently guide them straight. Use ever tool you can get your hands on. The most important tool? YOU! Be there. When you can't, use this device.
This is awesome! I can see where this can benefit parents and offices. Great job on keeping us updated on all the latest and greatest in technology.
I may buy this for my office.
I think this product can be very useful, esp when it comes to seeing what the kids are up to. Great article!
Good article. I think the product and recommended use are offensive, though. If people stoop so low that they spy on their family members, you really have to wonder...
