Snoring is a problem that many people have, when someone snores it can be a annoying to their bed mate and anyone else nearby. While snoring seems like a harmless sleeping habit it is not, it is a sign of a medical disorder called sleep apnea. If you suffer from chronic snoring you should first ask yourself whether it is a symptom of sleep apnea or not. If you constantly feel drowsy, if you have high blood pressure, if you have trouble breathing while asleep or if you're overweight you should talk to a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders. If you suffer from any of these things you may have sleep apnea. While you may have sleep apnea there are still things that you can do to slow down or stop snoring completely. A good idea is to use a single low pillow, sleeping on too many pillows will stretch and narrow the nasal passage.

Sleeping on your stomach is a great way to stop your snoring. People are a lot less likely to snore when they are on their stomachs. You can also buy an anti-snore pillow which is designed to keep people who snore on their side while asleep which can eliminate snoring. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can definitely stop snoring, that means exercise regularly to keep extra weight off, stop smoking, stop excessive drinking and drug usage, these things all can cause snoring. Another thing you should do is look over your medication because antihistamines, sleeping pills and some other medications can cause snoring. If you think that nasal congestion or allergies may be causing your snoring problem you should consult your doctor, also make sure your medication is antihistamine free. Nasal strips work well when trying to stop snoring, try an over the counter nasal strip such as breathe right and vapor strips. Nasal strips work to widen the nasal passages and to decrease congestion to reduce or stop snoring completely.

Surprisingly a dentist can also play a role in the process of stopping your snoring, ask your dentist about an oral appliance designed to reduce snoring. The most important thing that you can do is to discuss your sleep apnea problem with a sleep-disorder specialist. The things that you should ask the specialist about is a sleeping mask that will aid your breathing, surgery and radio frequency treatment. Severe sleep apnea can be fatal if it is left untreated People don't usually know this but eating big meals before bed can definitely can cause snoring because if your stomach is full it will push up onto your diaphragm and limit the passage ways for breathing. Another good idea is to inhale steam before going to sleep or sleeping in a room with a humidifier turned on, this will moisturize your throat and reduce congestion. A problem with a persons respiratory passage interferes with a persons ability to breathe while sleeping, in severe cases a person can stop breathing for a minute or longer.

Snoring is a problem that should not be taken lightly, consulting a sleep disorder specialist is your best bet when trying to safely treat your snoring.
