Snow in Atlanta Forces Cancellations; Other News

The snow continues to fall in parts of Atlanta as of 4 p.m. on Sunday.

WSB-TV and the Atlanta Journal & Constitution have reported the following cancellations:

The Hunger Walk was cancelled.
Bad weather forced Six Flags to close.
AirTran cancelled ATL flights.
Delta cancelled 450 flights.
The airport reports delays up to two hours.
Several schools and school districts will be closed on Monday.

Other weather-related news:

There are numerous wrecks on Atlanta's highways and roads.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising drivers in north and central Georgia to curtail driving as much as possible.
Roads and bridges may ice over as temperatures drop into the 20's Sunday night.
MARTA trains are running as usual.
The winter weather advisory has been upgraded to a winter weather warning until midnight.
Many local churches have cancelled Sunday services.
3,000 customers in Forest Park and 1,800 in Tucker lost power because of weather-related problems.
Georgia Power reports that Atlanta could experience scattered power outages throughout the night.
"Thundersnow" was reported from various parts of Atlanta.
Grocery stores are reporting no panic buying.

Will schools close on Monday?

For thousands of anxious children, this is the key question. Spokespersons for DeKalb and Cobb schools said that a decision will be made 5:00-5:30 on Monday morning. They will first send out drivers at 4:00 AM to test out the roads. A determination will be made after assessing the driving conditions. Some school districts and schools have already announced a Monday closing.

Monday's forecast calls for sunny skies and a high temperature of 48.

The Friday and Saturday rainfall was good news for drought-stricken areas and lake levels, but the Weather Service warned it could overrun streams and creeks.

The Weather Channel reports that this potent southern storm has dropped 5.5 inches of snow in Concord, Alabama, and at least 5 inches in Columbus, Georgia.
Now the storm off the Carolina coast will zip toward the Canadian Maritimes overnight and Monday. Winter storm warnings are in effect from the Carolinas to Maine.
