An evening bombardment of hail that night, lasting about 30 seconds, and flashes of lightening capped another day of rainy weather in the Pasadena and greater Los Angeles areas. The hail coated our street and vehicles before the brief cloudburst finished and moved eastward.
As a high school soccer referee, I watched a band of red and the word "cancelled" show across my scheduled games this week. The rain on Thursday, January 21, was different than the preceding days of rain when the precipitation was an all-day steady rain.
There were more intense bursts of rain in the late morning, mid afternoon and early evening even though the periods of actual rainfall were shorter than earlier in the week. The rain would pound for one or two minutes and then stop for about 10 minutes to 15 minutes.
During heavy rains, I enjoy driving by or down into Eaton Canyon to watch the water rage over the normally dry boulders and in to a catch basin along New York Drive.
Snow levels were far below Mt. Wilson where temperatures stood at 30 degrees on Thursday evening.
Glendale, California was enforcing evacuations in the areas affected by the late August - early September Station Fire. Officials will re-evaluate conditions on Friday, January 22 before lifting the mandatory evacuation.
Sandbags are available through Glendale, Pasadena and all foothill cities. Officials caution residents not to eat any food, even canned food, that comes into contact with rainwater.
In Long Beach, Cal State Long Beach was closed for two days with flooding in the Student Union building and a tornado was spotted in the area.
On Thursday evening, the California Highway Patrol Web site had a listing of 21 incidents.
