Snow and Ice Storm Moves into Northeast

The first snowstorm of the season hit the Northeast, after leaving snow, sleet and freezing rain in the Midwest. Many in the east woke up Sunday with snow, freezing rain and sleet, with more expected. The National Weather Service website says "Heavy snow is likely across upstate New York into New England with freezing rain and sleet across much of New York, Pennsylvania, and northwest New Jersey." And, their website says the storm will be continuing into Monday.

The winter weather advisory also affects parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and the Mid Atlantic and Lower New England -- including Northeastern Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, parts of Massachusetts and Southern New York including Long Island.

According to the NWS webpage, on Long Island and in New York City, the initial snowfall wasn't too deep. A Weather Service spotter in Suffolk County reported about a third of an inch, a spotter at Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, reported one inch, and a Central Park measurement taken at 7 am said there was only half an inch.

People north of NYC got a bit more, Westchester County's spotter reported 1.9 inches at about 9:30 am, and in Orange County, a spotter reported getting 3 inches by 9:45am.

In Hudson county, New Jersey, three spotters reported getting one inch. It was a bit higher in Union County, with 1.9 inches reported in Roselle.

This is all quite a bit less than people in the Midwest experienced.

NOAA's information for Minnesota indicates, the storm left more than a foot of snow in spots in that state. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration webpage indicates that even though the major storm moved to the northeast, they're still expecting some snow showers with another 2 inches or less. Also, they're expecting to get some lake effect snow to add to their totals.

Wisconsin also got several inches from the snowstorm that moved through. According to the NOAA page for their state, "Snowfall of 2 to 5 inches rapidly accumulated for several hours" on Saturday. That led to dangerous travel conditions. NOAA says the snow then changed to sleet and freezing rain. The ice then accumulated on trees and power lines. According to NOAA, Eau Claire had 5.3 inches of snow yesterday.

They also had very slick weather in Chicago. In the Windy City, NOAA says people experienced snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain that could affect trees and power lines. NOAA says driving conditions became very dangerous, with cars sliding through intersections causing at least one four-car crash in Iroquois county.

Great reporting of this! So far, in PA, this snow storm doesn't compare to the one that we had a few weeks ago. Hopefully it won't!
