Of course, after wiping the sleep from my eyes, I am expecting to see at least a few inches of snow. But no! What has accumulated is about 1 inch of snow, but at 5:30 in the morning it was already turning over to rain. This is very typical of the weather we have been experiencing this winter in Southeastern New England. When you leave the house in the morning you need to dress for the Polar Express, but by the end of the day it feels like spring is on its way.
Just over 30 years ago, this area was not so lucky! On February 6th, 1978 there was a blizzard that crippled the Northeast for over 1 full week. I recall that storm and seeing Army pay loaders at the end of my street scooping up the snow and dumping it into dump trucks that had to carry it away because there was no place to put the snow. It is a great memory, because I was in my home with my parents and was able to enjoy the "digging out."
We got to have a week out of school, build snow forts, and walk to the store to get bread and milk. It was a great time with neighbors helping each other to dig out, people going down the street on cross country skis and snowmobiles. However, those stranded on the roads all around the state were not so happy. My uncle was one of these people and he had to walk 10 miles to get to his aunts house, but at least he had a place to go to and stay.
Fade back in to today....the big warnings and forecasts and "hoopla" was a false alarm this time. A day that started out with temperatures in the 30's and snow, ended with temperatures in the 50's and rain. There was a total of about 3 inches of snow/rain throughout the day, with at least one casualty...a roof collapse in Providence, RI. (see photo courtesy of NBC 10, Providence RI) Other than that, a pretty uneventful day in little old Rhody!

Post a CommentHi mamalav - good story! Your reference to the blizzard of '78 brought back memories. I was still in college (RIC) and living in the dorm when the blizzard hit. They cancelled classes, then a particularly nasty strain of the flu went through the dorms and most of the remaining studennts who hadn't left already fell ill. (Including me) I remember the six-foot snow drifts...
Isn't almost spring a real mix? Good article :) Sheri
I grew up in Lil Rhody ... this brings back memories!
I liked this article. I live in Oregon and the winters of my childhood were much different than they are now. We had many 'snow' days where we could stay home from school for a day or two. Now, just a two hour delay is about all that the kids have every couple of years. This year was different though. They had several inches of snow and school was out for two whole days! I was in Southern Ca. at the time so missed the whole event! I still love snow even though I am a grandmother now. I was so glad my grandchildren had the chance to enjoy a 'real' winter for once.
By the way, I've been to R.I. several times and love your beaches and warm ocean! We have the COLD Pacific here in Oregon. Beautiful, but you can't swim and play in the water.
Im a new yorker but spent a truckload of time in rhode island duie to family and school. Greaat article btw. i love how u portrayed typical Rhody weather!
