Snow Showered with Love: 4 Things to Do on Valentine's Day when You Are Snowed In
AC Writer DST is Snowed-In with Her Sweetheart
Today, however, it's white. Lots of white.
My valentines for the ladies at work will be a day late, as I am snowed in.
I got my lovely dozen roses yesterday, just incase of a blizzard. Well, it did. And we're not talking the kind from Dairy Queen.
Since I called in from work on this snow-filled day, I'd feel quite guilty going out for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner. I don't think we'd make it out anyhow. My boyfriend of three-plus years made reservations at a secret place; they even called to confirm. He doesn't think we can make it, which is saying a lot. We have four-wheel drive, and he's pretty fearless.
But wait. As I flip on the TV I see that there is a "state of emergency" in the city. While we are about 20 miles away, we have to drive through it to get to where he wanted to take me. We can't go anywhere anyway.
That's okay though. I haven't seen a plow truck in a few hours, yet somehow despite the rest of the mountainous township I reside being snowed in, the redneck bar across the street is packed with pickups. (I guess nothing will keep them from their love: alcohol.)
What this does mean is that the man and I get to spend the whole day-the day meant for lovebirds-together. At least that's what I thought when we both called off work this morning. (I ended up sleeping in until 2:00 and he's been fiddling with the snow blower in the garage. Just our luck, it's broken.) Yep. I don't think we are going anywhere.
It was ironic the gifts I gave him, and thank goodness I bought them yesterday. Usually I am last minute and would have gotten them on Valentine's Day on the way home from work. Last week he bought a brand new gray wool coat. So, I got him a nice hat and nice, black leather gloves to accessorize the coat. I also clipped out a "Love Is" comic a month ago and gave it to him inside a small black picture frame. (It had the little guy brining the girl coffee in the morning, which reminds me of us.)
Here are some things that snowed-in lovers may do today:
Making Dinner
Tonight, it would have been wonderful to have someone else wait on us so we could gaze into each other's eyes and play footsies under the table all evening. But no. One of us will have to cook and I am guessing it will be yours truly. I do have some onions, peppers, ginger, honey and chicken, so I am thinking I can whip up something Vietnamese.
We just finished our dining room, which has deep red walls and a dimmer light, so we can still have the romantic lighting, and that romantic mood. And of course, food. After all, that IS the way to a man's heart, right?
One thing that I am wondering, however, is if I will still be proposed to. I mean, I am not totally sure if that was the plan at this restaurant, but he seemed to drop some hints. When reality set in that we weren't going anywhere he said, "This was supposed to be a special night for us...."
So, I think couples everywhere will be cooking together tonight.
Making Babies
I am thinking that nine months from now, there will be a lot of babies born in Northeast PA and other snow-ridden locales. I mean, come on, what else are lovers to do when they are snowed in on arguably the most romantic day of the year?
Making New Plans
For others who don't make some spontaneous alternative at-home plans for tonight, they are probably instead making plans for a belated V-day dinner. The news last night had reporters at local romantic hotspots interviewing owners. At that time, they had hoped people would still make it out, however at that time no one was sure we'd get the blizzard. They did however also encourage people to change reservations to this weekend.
Making Snowmen and Angels
Hey! What is more fun then playing in the snow. Couples can be playful today by getting in their snowsuits and heading outside to make a snowman or angels in the snow. Although where I live, we have two feet. A snowman is a much better option than an angel, today. We'd sink otherwise!
Final thoughts:
Being snowed in withthe one you love is definitely better than being snowed in alone, at least. You have someone to warm you up! There's always hot chocolate, or maybe some Irish coffee too.

Post a CommentCongratulations on your engagement. That is very exciting.
Thanks Melody! Yeah, I heard about CO's blizzard!
Congrats on the engagement! We have snow in Colorado, too, on Valentine's Day. For once though, we are not snowed in like you are!
You should write about it, Renee! I was surprised that AC put this on the front page-- my first time being showcased!! I sometimes wish I was a teacher so I get snowdays!! My boss always expect us in anyway-- but people were stuck on the highways here for hours today so I am glad I called off!
We too are snowed in! Fun stuff. I'm a teacher so I didn't have to "call in" b/c school was canceled. CONGRATS on getting engaged. I was wondering what would happen. Sounds like you've had a nice day. I should write a piece on being snowed in with 3 young boys!! I could have used some of the Bailey's! :)
Thanks for the comments, gals! I know some of you are in the same boat as me! Argh! Kathleen- I hear on the news a lot that they have volunteers with 4x4's pick up nurses-- that is very cool that people come get you! UPDATE: He DID pop the question. I'm engaged.
I'm also in NE Pa...I think I saw the same cool tire track picture on the news. Unfortunately, I'm a nurse...no calling in cuz ppl still need care no matter whats going on outside. I had to drive home in it this AM...a pure nightmare, and tonight they are coming to pick me up cuz my car is frozen solid in its spot. Valentines Day with my sweetie hubby was nice tho.
I think I might try some of this..considering I'm in the same boat you are! Thanks for the tips and also for making such a gloomy, cold, and backbreaking day (from shoveling snow of course) into a nice, warm, cozy, retreat. Afterall, it WILL still be there tomorrow. Nice article!
Sounds very nice.
