Snow Totals Currently Approaching Records in East Coast

Robert Dougherty
Snow totals are being sought all over in the East Coast. The current snow totals are already massive, but when this storm ends, it could be historic. The East Coast was already hit hard by a few storms this year, yet today's may be twice as hard, and twice as hyped. Already, the "Snowmaggedon" and "Snowpocalypse" has estimates of up to 2-3 feet, at the very least, falling over the East. The snow totals may ultimately fall at around 30 inches in some places, but that is more than enough.

Current snow totals are hard to gather, especially since the East Coast storm isn't over yet. By tonight, experts should be closer to figuring out the final total, and whether they've set a record. In the states of Maryland, Virgina and West Virginia, the damage has already paralyzed their cities.

Washington DC snow totals are estimated to be as high as 30 inches when it's all over, which would set a record. Baltimore faces the same fate, as does most of Maryland and Virginia. Thousands of people in Maryland and West Virginia have lost power, with high winds adding to the storm's power.

At the least, somewhere around 20 inches or more are in Washington DC, with more possible throughout area in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Philadelphia already had 18 inches by morning, while New Jersey could get up to 2 feet at the shore.

It seems that the worst snow totals will top out at about 30 inches, though there are certain to be reports of some areas getting three feet. Beyond that, they can't get any higher - at least for this current storm.

The East Coast will have a few days to dig out of this mess, before more snow is scheduled to arrive mid-week. Those snow totals certainly won't be as big, but after getting hit with a couple of feet, any more seems like overkill.

The current snowfall varies from area to area, as some got hit the hardest while others escaped by comparison. New York is one of the few East Coast states in the region that may not get a lot - or at least, not a lot by Washington/Maryland standards.

Snow totals are already dwarfing the amount that the region got in December. Combined with that storm, this stands to be one of the worst winters in several years. That has become clearer the more that this snowfall climbs up the record books, with still several hours left to go.

Where can I find out about the dates and snowfall amounts for each of the snow events in the DC area since December 1, 2009?
