Snowboarding for Beginners

The Equipment and the Know How

James Colbert
Snowboarding has a strange learning curve as far as sports go. At first it can be one of the most difficult endeavors you have ever undertaken, but eventually that wears away and everything becomes second nature. Once you have struggled through and learned the basics the fancy stuff comes pretty easily. The question you may have now though is; how the Heck do I get Started? To answer that you first need some basic knowledge about the equipment used, as well as some understanding of your own ability level.

Snowboarding equipment is pretty standard. There are many brands and some fancy names, but initially you can just go with rentals or with some cheap stuff that you can find at any sporting goods store, since chances are your going to be pretty hard on it at first. Obviously first is the board, you want a board that comes up to about your chin. As you get better you may desire a taller or shorter board depending on what kind of excitement your after, which is why you should start cheap since you may want it replaced soon after. Next are the bindings. Bindings are the two contraptions on top of your board which hold your boots in place. You shouldn't go too cheap here, as the straps can break while your out a the mountain. This can certainly create a challenge getting down the hill. Along with the bindings you need to look at boots. Sadly you can't really just get regular walking boots and strap them into your bindings. You need actual snowboard boots since they offer more support and are a tight enough fit to actually give you decent control of the board. This is basically all you need, although there are some other tips on what to bring. You should dress warm, but in layers, since you may heat up over the course of the day. Also, beginners should really consider helmets and wrist guards since you can plan on falling a considerable amount while you learn.

Now that you're all equipped we need to look at your skill level. What activities have you done that are similar? Skateboarding will provide the best carryover to snowboarding know how. Many people assume that since they've skied snowboarding will be easy for them but that is simply not true. People who have a wealth of experience doing things like skiing, ice skating and rollerblading have a different mindset. Everything you have experience in you faced straight and you're self of balance has become based on that. These people should be ready for a big change.

Now its time to get out there and hit the hills, probably literally and with many parts of your anatomy. The road to becoming a snowboarder is a painful one, yet very rewarding. In my next article I will cover the basics of getting started on your snowboard, and actually riding down a hill, so keep your eyes open for that one soon.
