Snowboarding: The Best Sport Ever

Alex Smith
Whether you're a novice at snowboarding or simply like trying out new tricks, then I simply must share the kind of snowboarding activities that I have personally tried out in the past, as well as the ones I intend to try out in the future.

The only contact I had with snow sports before I first tried out snowboarding were the couple of attempts I took at skiing, so snow was definitely still unknown territory for me when I first set foot on a snowboard. All I was looking for at the time was a little bit of fun and a new experience.

I went to the slopes with all of my friends, with the hopes of seeing how much fun snowboarding entails and we indeed had a ton of fun; much more, in fact, than I had bargained for. Our group of friends only had a rough idea on how to ski and we seemed far cockier about snowboarding than we should have been, but it was so much fun all the same; the most fun we had had in our lives thus far. The slopes we were on were pretty quiet and practically empty, which made it so much better because it gave us a feeling of ownership and belonging.

Being on a snowboard is a great feeling because once you set foot on one, you feel like you have so much control despite the risks that you know come with it. Skiing is far too "safe" when compared to snowboarding, so it is no surprise to me that more and more people are replacing their skiing habits with snowboarding. (Jumping just isn't possible on skis; not the way you can jump on a snowboard!) That said, I don't think there are words to explain how it felt when I first jumped on a snowboard and successfully landed it. I promised myself I would give it a try again in the near future.

Once we got more comfortable on our snowboards, our group of friends decided to have a race down the slopes. I was actually very nervous about this at first, though mostly because I was determined to win. However, I also knew that, even if I didn't, at least I had tried my very best. The next few minutes consisted of the most daring runs imaginable; and that's saying something, since we were mere beginners at the sport. All I could think about was winning, although in the back of my head, I was also worrying as to what might happen if I hit a tree or took a wrong turn, which is exactly what I did in the end. I was pretty gutted that I had lost, but the exhilarating feeling that came with snowboarding just made me want to do more. I promised myself I would do it again and all of my friends were up for it. Mostly, it was really about those snowboard ollies, really. Honestly, if you think jumping on skis are great, you have experienced nothing yet.

The major problem we had encountered in doing our races was failing to abide by the slope rules of aggressive turning and twisting. During our last race, one of my friends actually pushed another friend into a tree for a laugh. Though that may not sound funny to most people, it was the kind of things that you just did on a whim. Maybe you had to be there.

Needless to say, that snowboarding day was one of the most exciting days of my life, and snowboarding is definitely the best sport I have experienced so far. And although I enjoy both skiing and snowboarding these days, I still never fail to think back on that first day we had snowboarding on the slopes.
