Snowboarding Equipment for Beginners

Advice from an Advanced Boarder

There are many pieces of snowboarding equipment that you need to go snowboarding. In this article, I will discuss them and offer suggestions for obtaining everything you need to get started.

The first piece of snowboarding equipment you'll need is a snowboard and snowboard boots. You can either rent these at the mountain or you can purchase them from a snowboard shop. There are many varieties of snowboards and the appropriate one for you depends on a lot of factors that an expert can help you sort through (size, weight, style of snowboarder, level of experience, etc).

Next, you'll need appropriate clothes. Since it will be cold, you'll need a warm coat, warm gloves, warm snowboarding pants, and warm socks. Many snowboarding outfitters make these items, and they range from cheap to very expensive. If it's your first time snowboarding, see if you can borrow some of these things from friends, as you'll be able to try out the sport without a major monetary investment. You will need base layers of clothes to go under each of these items, too! Base layers can be either synthetic fabrics or merino wool, whichever you prefer. Merino wool is very warm and has anti-odor properties, but is generally more expensive than synthetics. For protection, you'll need a helmet for your head (DO NOT SKIP THE HELMET!). Some riders like to wear wrist guards to prevent broken wrists. These items are also available in most sporting goods stores and their online websites. You'll also need a pair of ski/snowboard goggles (they're the same for each sport). Some goggles are made to specifically fit a certain helmet so you don't get the dreaded "forehead gap". Again, prices for goggles range anywhere from $30 to over $180, and functionality generally increases with the more expensive goggles (such as interchangeable lenses, a protection case, etc).

Many riders like to carry a backpack. Inside the backpack, riders can take their lunch, their keys to their car or condo, their shovels for building jumps or rescuing avalanche victims, an avalanche probe, their camera, a cloth to clean goggles, a hat for wearing during lunch when you're helmet is off, and/or an extra pair of dry gloves in case the first pair gets wet. Snowboarding is a great sport which you will surely enjoy very much! I hope that provides you with a good overview of the snowboarding equipment that you'll need to start snowboarding.
