Snowed In: Fun Family Activities when You Can't Get Out

Ted Sherman
Being snowed in can be an awful time for parents. Not only are they confined at home, but being trapped with a bunch of noisy, active kids, can result in frustration for both parents and kids.

However, there are ways to make the winter hours pass pleasantly in the trapped house, providing both the adults and kids are willing to find happy things to do together. First, some of the pressure can be relieved by finding kids-only things to do.

1. If the parents have prepared in advance for the winter storm, they'll have plenty of DVDs available for the kids. They can include animated cartoons, kid-themed movies, games and inter-active exercise programs. These could take up the entire snowed-in day, and allow parents to sneak off into their own part of the house to watch their TV programs, read or just snuggle under a warm blanket together.

2. For getting the entire family into one activity at a time, traditional parlor games could be the solution to boredom on a snowed-in day. It may be worthwhile to take out the chess, checkers, Scrabble, Monopoly and Battleship boards to keep everyone busy.

3. Cooking and baking projects could not only keep the kids busy, but also will give them tasty rewards for their efforts. If the kids are old enough, start off by showing them how to prepare a breakfast or lunch of scrambled eggs and bacon. You could also supervise them in making rolls and cookies from frozen packages or from scratch. Come up with interesting dinner menus and let the kids join in on the preparations.

4. If you have a fireplace, it would be the right place to move a table or spread blankets for a family indoor picnic. Have the kids help prepare sandwiches, soups, side dishes and desserts. Complete the picnic with roasting marshmallows in the fireplace, and maybe try some old fashioned-singalongs from your collection of favorite campfire songs.

5. Bedtime when you're snowed in can be entertaining if the parents and older kids read stories to the younger ones. Choose children's stories with snow themes, including Pinoccio, Goldilock, and of course, Snow White.

When you're all snowed in at home, and there's no other place to go nor other people you can be with, your family can be the most fun. The parents should choose activities that will keep the kids busy and happy, while they can join in and/or get away by themselves to cuddle and enjoy the winter day together.
