Snowflake Donuts in Boerne, Texas: A Review

The Best Kept Secret

Lori Piper
We all love secrets. We all have them. Some we share with others. Some we try hard to keep shut away.

However, some secrets need to be shouted from the rooftops. They need to be spread both far and wide. They need to not be secrets anymore.

One such secret I have discovered is Snowflake Donuts in Boerne, Texas.

They have the best plain glazed donuts I have ever had... and since I love donuts... I have had a lot. My girth will testify to that.

Many of you know I am involved with cat rescue. My low cost spay and neuter vet is located in Boerne... an hour from where I live. Usually it is not a problem. Once a week I load up cats and take then to Boerne in the morning and then head back into town and work. Another rescue friend picks them up. It all works out so that no one is too put out or becomes too burnt out from the transporting.

Boerne is a tourist town. It is gorgeous. The shops all line up and down Main Street and traffic is never too crowded. It is the quintessential quaint town. That is one of the main reasons no one minds the drive. It is peaceful after all.

This week my rescue friend was out of town and we took in ten Persians from the worst home environment I have ever seen. It was an emergency to rescue these cats, so we did.

Now we have several foster homes that are willing to foster these Persians for us, but until we have them all medically checked out and cleared... they will remain with us.

So two trips were necessary this week to get them all checked and evaluated.

On the morning of the second trip... I was tired and cranky. I have been up until the wee hours every night this week working with these cats and then waking up a couple hours later to go to work.

I was leaving Boerne when I passed by the donut shop... just as I do every week and have for almost two years....when I decided that is it --- I want a donut.

I turned in...and though parking was cramped, I was able to find a secure place that would allow me to simply back right on out and be on my way to work.

I entered this small shop not really having any expectations, other than I wanted a donut and a cup of coffee.

The place was clean and well lit. Every table was occupied by people of varying ages... business professionals, mothers with their infant children, college students, construction crews... to name a few.

Being as I had not been in there before, I stood back and looked up at the menu (painted in precise and bold lettering-a plus for sure) and began to gawk.

They had a huge array of croissants that sounded dimply delicious. However, I came in for one donut and one cup of coffee.

I needed to get back on the road in order to get to work on time.

An older gentleman came into the store whilst I was still gawking and standing back... he went right up to the front register and said "a dozen of the bacon and cheese croissants please... nothing else...a" . I asked him if they were any good... he told me this is how he keeps his staff happy.

The mom and her children picked up their dozen glazed donuts and I asked them what they thought... in chorus, all three replied... they are the best donuts ever. Okay... as I ordered my coffee and my one glazed donut... what, instead, came out of my mouth, was a dozen mixed donuts and six ham and cheese croissants, please.

These were not small croissants, either.

They smelled heavenly on my drive to work. I did make myself wait until I actually arrived at work to sample one.

Within minutes, we had devoured all the donuts and five of the croissants... There were only five of us there that morning.

Those glazed donuts were the best I had ever tasted. Krispy Kreme, who?

All for less than fifteen dollars!

In addition, the Boston Crème donuts... the filling was so thick and creamy, the donut resembled a baseball... actually a softball... and were yummy!

These are the best! The secret is out... If you are ever in Boerne, Texas, go to Snowflake Donuts... located right on Main Street.

You will be glad you did... I know I am.
