Snowman Lesson Plan and Activities for Preschool and Homeschool Students

Snowmen and snowwomen are universally loved by preschool age children. This snowperson lesson plan will provide a great learning experience for preschool and homeschool students in all climates.

Math: Ordering Snowballs by Size

Give students white paper "snowballs" in various sizes. Let them sort the snowballs into piles from smallest to largest. When they are finished sorting the snowballs, let them choose a small snowball for a head, medium snowball for a body, and large snowball to be the base of the snowman. Let them glue their snowballs to a blue piece of paper and decorate with crayons and markers.

Art: Foam Ball Snowman Sculptures

Give your children plastic-foam balls in two sizes to use for making snow people. Also provide blocks of plastic foam to use for bases. Let the children construct their snow people by attaching the snowballs to each other and the base with toothpicks. Provide markers to make features. Also provide glue and yarn pieces, pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, wrapping paper scraps, ribbon pieces, and pompoms to decorate their snow people.

Science: How Quickly does a Snowman Melt

Create five small snow people using real snow or "snow" created by placing ice in a blender. Let students guess which method will make the snow people melt the quickest: cold water, hot water, salt water, salt only, and nothing. Let students observe which method melts the snow people the quickest and the slowest.

Song: The Chubby Little Snowman

Sing fun snowman song to the tune of, "Sing a Song of Sixpence."

A chubby little snowman had a carrot for a nose.
Along came a bunny and what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny was looking for his lunch,
And he ate that snowman's nose. . . .Cr.....rrr....unch!

Language: Sequencing Words

Have students describe how to make a snowman using the words, "First," "Next," "Then," and "Last." Draw simple illustrations of a snowman being created on large blank index cards. Let students arrange the cards and describe the process using their sequence words.

Storytime: Snowman Books

Appropriate books for preschool storytime include: The Snowman Storybook by Raymond Briggs, Snowie Rollie by William Joyce, and Snowballs by Lois Ehlert.

PE: Melting Snowpeople Game

Have students pose as snowmen and women. Choose one or two students to be the warm sun. When the "sun" tags the students, they melt to the ground. When all students are melted, choose another student to be the sun.

Snack: Snowpeople Pancakes

Let students make snowmen using three small pancakes. They can dust their pancakes with powdered sugar "snow" and create faces and buttons using bits of dried fruit.
