So Who is Carl Jackson and What Has He Done?

Bill Hanks
The Masters Golf Tournament is the first major golf tournament of the year. There is nothing like it in the world of golf. Playing in it requires skill, great play and good luck. Following it as a fan, usually takes a lottery on a ticket, money, and opportunity. Carl Jackson has had the opportunity to caddie in it for fifty years. They celebrated his fiftieth tournament this year.

Carl Jackson started shagging balls at Augusta at the age of 11. By the age of 14, he was caddying on golfs grandest stage. Thirty Five years ago, he teamed up with Ben Crenshaw as his caddy. The two have stayed together during the Masters Tournament these past years. Crenshaw has won two Masters. His last one being in 1995.

Crenshaw was recently asked, "What made Jackson so good at caddying?" Crenshaw said, "He is best at reading the putts on the green of all players." In other words, he studies what other caddy's and players decide. He then watches, studies and helps make decisions on play.

In 2000, Jackson had a bout with cancer. Crenshaw was with him as he battled this disease. Through the years the two have become very close friends.

Crenshaw is close to retiring from play at the Masters. Jackson has yet to decide, if he will retire, too.

Just imagine, not only watching but being involved in the Masters for fifty years. Just watching the entire tournament on television would be fun. Jackson has had fifty years live. He has seen the greats, as well as historic play.

Eventually Jackson will be mentioned in the history of this tournament. He is what the Masters is all about.
