So What is the Issue: Al Gore's Electric Bill or Global Warming?

Jeff Mullins
The tendency today is for some within our society to disregard an issue and commence with a personal attack on the messenger; especially if they happen to be aligned with the opposing political party. A perfect example of this is the controversy surrounding Al Gore's crusade against global warming. Instead of spending their time doing the research required to debate intelligently on the subject, many are more interested in discussing Al Gore's financial status, how big his house is, how much energy he wastes, and how often he flies in a private jet.

These attempts at directing public attention away from the issue and towards the private personal attacks have become too common place and does nothing more than cause more friction within our society. The people who practice this activity should consider if this is what they truly want their contribution to society to be. Here is what I concern myself with. Is the information in Al Gore's presentation on Global Warning accurate or not?

If you want to get my attention, then refute the scientific evidence that Al Gore uses. Don't tell me what his 2006 electric bill was. That's not the issue. If you don't believe the information he presents then disprove it. Don't tell me how big of a swimming pool he heats. That's not the issue. If you think his predictions are inaccurate then tell me why you think they are inaccurate. Don't tell me that George Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas is much more environmentally friendly than Al Gore's home in Tennessee. I applaud President Bush for that, but again, that isn't the issue.

Here's a novel idea; fight the issue, not the messenger. I have yet to see anyone make a concerted effort to refute the information that is used in Al Gore's presentation on Global Warning. Can anybody disprove that we are polluting our environment, and if we do not try to reduce it, there will be irreversible damage within the next 40 to 50 years? This is the basis for Al Gore's presentation on Global Warming. If anybody can refute this, I, unlike others, would be willing to listen to the other side of the story. Don't tell me that Al Gore is just another Liberal Democrat and for that reason we shouldn't listen to what he has to say.

Grow up people. Let's stop the mud-slinging and name-calling and concentrate on the issue. If Americans wanted to see this type of behavior, all they have to do is go visit a 3rd grade class at their local elementary school.

The issue is NOT "killing the messenger". Rather the level of hypocrisy that the messenger brings to the table. I understand what Mr. Gore is trying to say. However, it is hard to listen to what Mr. Gore and Robert Kennedy Jr. are saying if they do not "walk the walk". The private jet that each of these gentlemen use for transportation use more fossil fuel in one trip than your average car uses in one year. If they are not doing ALL they can for Global Warming, then they need to expect the backlash that they are receiving. THEY put themselves in this position by not first doing what they are asking of others.

Agreed that nothing with regard to Gore's personal business is the issue, however if one falls in the catagory of human caused global warming "skeptic" as I am, I'm told my denial makes me the equal of a "facist, Holocaust denier." Doesn't sound like those that believe global warming is human caused are interested in discussing the issue to me. Par the course, somehow this issue has become political, and as usual the Liberal supporters are rather disagreeable toward those who disagree with them. Liberal's want agreement, not discussion.
