So What is on Your Label? How Are You Listed in the Class System?

Robyn Graham
The compartmentalization of individuals make us feel safe. I understand this concept yet I feel that an individual must continually monitor themselves in order to prevent the growth of class-ism within their thought patterns. We listen to how each other speak , we look at each others clothes as a method of sectioning off those who surround us. This is a method of self preservation.

Yet, this form of self preservation can be dangerous. I resist a person who puts me into a group and work hard not to section off those around me . I resist the mass medias attempt to classify me as well as others. I believe that we rarely know each other fully. Therefore making assumptions is unproductive. This may sound like an angry point of view yet, for me I look around and find that there is world of individuals that can enhance our lives when we stop classifying each other. This to me is explorable beauty.

The games listed on the PBS website taught me a lot about how I am classified by others. You See I was organized into the upper middle class. This is funny since my financial records show I sit in the middle of the lower class. I took a significant pay cut when I chose to finish my education . I am poor but not starving. I am poor while living in a wealth of learning and loving. The reason for this discrepancy seems to be that have not always lived without significant means. Also while I am educating myself I am exposed to the better things in life. I like books in my living room Because I do not want to forget the power of the written word. I like electronics because movies and music soothe me. Not because of a class specification.

When I see someone who is dirty and has the eyes of a scared horse I stay away from them because they may be on drugs. If I come in contact with someone who speaks perfectly I want to speak with them and learn from them. But, at the same time when I see someone with that smooth suit I want to know where they bought It even if that suit is an ethnic status symbol. Because I need other " Types" of people in my life. I need to learn from the " Blacks", "Whites" ,"Asians" and the working poor and teach me something too. We all bleed red is an old saying and it rings true. While There are times you should isolate yourself from those who surround you. Most often those who are different than you can enhance your way of thinking.

Many Black people use the term wasted When Many White People use the term spilled. This way a speaking may classify many of us yet for me I can learn how other look at milk on the floor.

I think this whole CLASSification goes back to language and how one group perceives themselves. I can also sense the ethnocentrism how others use the bases of their own culture to judge another. The entire concept is stupid but it exists and does impact our lives for better or for worse. I learned that I'm a chameleon but I never ended up in the poorest class... Does that make me better or blessed? I think not but just fortunate.
